  • [SOLVED] Problems loading VE Pro6 in Pro Tools 12.6

    Hi,

I am recently having problems with VE Pro 6, not sure if it is after the latest update. When I load an existing session in pro Tools 12.6 that already has a VEP instance, the session does not load, and freezes when it starts restoring the aux tracks that recieve audio from VEP server. I shift-opened the session with all plugins inactive, and then activated the plugin one by one and found that it was VE Pro isntance that was causing the problem.

I tried loading the same session with no VE Pro, then inistated a new instance, re-routed all audio inputs, but now I cannot get the midi to go through to VEP server. It is like there is no connection. When I play on the keyboard, VEP does not recieve any midi, eventhough the VEP preference has the Default Midi Channel set to ALL. However, if midi notes are entered manually on a midi track, the notes play. the keybaord works perfectly fine on a standalone Kontakt, so it is not the kepybaord itself, but I suspect this has to do how my midi keyboard (Axiom 61) interacts with the latest VE Pro updated. but not sure what?

I also noticed something new in the VEP plugin that is loaded on the pro tools instrument track, which I do not think was there before. It says : Midi Node: Vienna Ensemble Pro 1 1 Port A.

I am not sure why this says Port A, when I have 16 other ports that I using on the midi tracks. does anyone see the same thing on the VE Pro plugin.

This is really frustrating, can someone please help.

    thanks

  • Bump !

  • Hi Jean Paul,

We have not heard of such a behaviour yet, so we are waiting for someone to confirm.

Do you want to send such a song to support@vsl.co.at

When the session does not load, can you please send us a sample from the hang?

    => Open Activity Monitor
    => Choose Vienna Ensemble PRO
=> Click the small "i" in the upper left corner
=> Click "Sample" in the lower left corner
=> Save the file and send it to us

    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. Not sure what you mean by activity monitor. I am on Windows 7 . Is that the same as the Task Manager. Just googled this and it sounds like it is similar to the dump file in Windows. Shoudl I create a dmp file after the VEP freezes and send that to you ?

A small note is that it is the VE Pro plugin that is freezing in Pro Tools and causing to crash not the VEP server. The VEP server does not itself freeze. So should I create a dmp file of Pro Tools?

I did a small test as follows:

    1. created new session, not from template.

    2. added instrument track, aux, track and midi track.

    3. loaded VE PRO plugin on the instrument track, loaded a Kontakt string patch in the VE server, routed audio inputs back into the Aux channel.

    4. When I play on the keyboard Axiom 61, no midi is transmitted to VEP server.

    5. but, strangely, when I arm-record the midi track to record, the midi is transmitted to VE server and I hear the sound !!

    6. I get the same result when loading the VEP plugin on an Aux track instead of an instrument track, i.e. midi goes thru only when the midi track is arm-recorded.

    7. When i play back the recorded midi track,  midi goes to the server and I get the sound out.

    8. I save the session, close and open again. When I arm-record the midi track I do not get any sound coming out like before. when I hit start on the transport to play the midi track, Pro Tools freezes.

UPDATE: I received another notification to update to the latest version, eventhough I had already updated a few days earlier. i went ahead and updted again, but the problem is not resolved

    thanks

    JP

  • Hi JP,

My bad about the sample hang, this is the best process on Windows:

Please create a process dump when PT hangs, see the following image on how to create a minidump with process explorer:
    http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/create-dump-1.png
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx

Maybe I´m misunderstanding the MIDI situation, but usually a track has to be armed/activated so that you can receive and send MIDI from/to that track, right?

Please send the process dump to support@vsl.co.at

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul

I finally figured out how to create a dump file for Pro Tools but it is around 120 MB in size. I tried to compress it to send it by email but it was still around 80 MB. I will try another method of sending you the file

Regrding the midi, there is one option in Pro Tools preference to have midi thru last selected track, so you do not have to arm-record the midi track before transmitting midi. I just found that I had that unchecked by mistake. But that is workign fine now.

My main problem is still this:

    1. when I open a new Pro Tools session with one VEP instnace, eveything works fine.

    2. The problem only occurs when I save the session, close it and attempt to re-open it. When I re-open, VEP plugin freezes.

    regards

    JP

  • Hello JP,

Did you try to use the process explorer?

    http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/create-dump-1.png

The dump file should be much smaller then.

  • Hi Paul

yes, I used Process Explorer and created a mini dump file, the moment  Pro Tools froze, but it was around 120 MB. I read that it should not more than 100 kB, but I am not sure why it is so large.

VEP plugin works fine if it is initiated on a new instrument track. The problem happens when I save a session with VEP plugin, and try to re-open again, as soon as I click on the VEP plugin, or start playback, that Pro Tools freezes. Very strange.

The only way to get some work done, is to load sessions with all plugins inactive, then initiate new VEP plugins, do the audio routing. But as soon as I save the session and re-open, it freezes when I start playback or click on the VEP plugin. I have tried testing with no plugins in the VEP server, and no plugins in pro tools, but still having the same problem

I have also uninstalled VEP and Pro Tools and reinstalled them, but it still did not work. I ran all kinds of virus programs and antispyware programs to make sure it is not a virus. The PC is clean, What could the cause be? Do you have any suggestions I can do? I am thinking maybe do a system restore tonight and see if that works. But that would be my last resort. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

    Regards

    JP

  • Hello Jean Paul,

I have just sent you an email with a link to upload your dump files for VE PRO and Pro Tools.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hello Paul,

Just to let you now that everything is working fine.

I removed all plugins from the VEP server template and then added them one by one, and found that a demo plugin that expired was causing the problem. So when I took it out, everything works and nothing freezes. It is also much faster when the instance is decoupled, so the session saves and loads much faster. I think part of the problem was that when Pro Tools saves a session with a coupled instance, it takes more RAM and I was utilizing most of my RAM in the VEP template, which was causing the pro tools session to freeze when loading. By saving a decoupled instance it seem to be working fine.

    thanks a lot

    Jean Paul
