  • Feature Request Or Suggestion: Chamber Strings Combi

I've had Chamber Strings for years now and love it. Most of the time, I'll start off using the Combi patch, work out an arrangement, then break it out into separate parts.

But sometimes the parts are so simple that it's not really necessary to do this EXCEPT that the Combi patch doesn't really sound all that great. The Svi patch doesn't sound very 'legato' and the range of patches aren't broad enough to handle a variety of accents (marcatos).

It seems to me that this Combi -could- be programmed to be a LOT better. In other words, it -could- be updated so that melody lines transition more smoothly, accents sound nicer, etc. without new samples.

Perhaps you could call this a 'Level 2 Combi' Patch.

I would HAPPILY pay for this program update as it would save me a LOT of time in not having to break out simply arrangements into separate MIDI tracks,

    Your thoughts?

  • My thoughts are that you could try designing your own patch to work the way you want; you could definitely arrange your own polyphonic legato ensemble in VI, for example.

I've done a LOT of programming in Kontakt, but never with VSL/VIPro. Can you give me some basics as to how one would do this?

My main goal is to simply make the transitions between notes in the Chamber Strings Svi patch smoother (ie. more legato)

  • I suggest reading the manual and watching VSL's videos on VI features - you can place multiple patches in a single cell on a matrix, and that includes legato patches. You can then crossfade the ranges of each section with each other (this is explained somewhere in the videos). I'm not aware if you need VI Pro, because I had it from the start and don't really remember which features the free version doesn't include.

Creating an 'ensemble' patch is not what I'm confused about. I'm sure I can do that.

But the Legato patches for Vln, Vla, Vc, CB are all monophonic. How does one combine, for example, 2 Violin Legato patches so that one can have a smooth melody line, but then still be able to have 2 voices sound at the same time?

VI-Pro lets you change the interval mode like so -

You can set it to polyphonic or monophonic.

    Thanks.

If VSL reads this stuff. I gotta say... I HATE having to watch videos when you add features. I would much prefer if you would simply revise the PDF. Or if that's too much work at least offer users the script of the videos as a PDF.

  • You could also try experimenting with your Release fader.  I think it defaults to 63?   Try bumping it up by 5 or so but if you go above 72 the legato, and other patches, start getting a little blurry with the wetter reverbs.
