Bacos Plays Chopin
Some might associate the subject of Chopin with the song “I like Chopin“ by the one-hit wonder, Gazebo in the early 80s. Maestro pianist, Guy Bacos, takes the subject to a new level. Quite simply, the piano works of the virtuosic Polish composer are among his favorite pieces and he can prove it. He recently recorded the Études Op. 10 and Op. 25 with version 1.1 of the Vienna Imperial and was amazed how easily it could be customized to suit the music. “Being able to balance the registers and even the single keys individually made the Études shine much more.” –Guy Bacos

More than just finger exercises for advanced piano students
The 24 Études Op. 10 and Op. 25 were written from 1829 to 1832. They were later assembled into categories by genre and became compulsory repertoire for today’s concert pianists. The beauty and complexity of these pieces requires concentration, stamina, dexterity and enormous control. They are more than just acrobatic finger exercises – they are characterized by lyrical melodic lines, rich modulation, chromatic harmonies and an enormous richness in expression and color. These Études explore the entire sonic spectrum of the piano.
Frédéric Chopin was born in 1810 in Zelazowa-Wola, near Warsaw to a French father and a Polish mother. He was considered a child prodigy and composed his polonaises in B and G Minor at the age of seven. It is no surprise that Bach and Mozart were his idols. After completing a concert tour in Vienna, Austria in 1829, he lived alternately in Warsaw, Vienna and Paris. In 1831 he befriended Berlioz and Liszt and made Paris his home. Chopin earned a living as a concert pianist, preferring the intimate atmosphere of “salon concertos” to large concert halls. Later he focused on teaching piano and spent his summers composing. He escaped the French Revolution of 1848 by traveling to Great Britain for several months. In 1849 Chopin returned to Paris, where he died, presumably of tuberculosis, at the age of 39.
Guy Bacos started playing the piano at the age of eight and only a short time later discovered his talent for improvising and composing. He completed his undergraduate studies in composition at the McGill University and earned a Masters in performance at the University of Montreal. He has been working extensively with the full range of Vienna Symphonic Library products for many years. His productions include original compositions and orchestral arrangements as well as recordings of famous works by the great composers. Guy Bacos lives and works as an independent pianist and composer in Montreal, Canada.
