 Hi,

I just read on another forum that if your Vienna key breaks you're out of luck.  Is there a way I can transfer my Vienna key to my Stienberg Key, which I have a zero downtime insurance?  Since it would be very, very expensive to rebuy everything I have from VSL, what would I do?

Thanks,

Best Regards,

Tony

I feel your frustration in this thread and the one that was linked too . I'm going thru the same thing.  I didn't lose my key mine stop working. Now it seem there about to make me pay $70+ to get a new usb and license replaced. O and since i bought it in 2007 its out of the 2 year warranty. I used to understand having these sticks to protect the company but now i see the backlash. At least with ilok i have the option to download it from the server.

Yes here we go again because it BS if you pay for something it should be yours already.  No hatred toward vsl product but there business practice needs to change if they want people to keep supporting them. And i seeing allot of people on the forums are having key issues. Only good thing for them maybe they just got there new key in the last 2 years or they would be out of luck.

Hard lesson learned dont want anyone else to go thru it either.

Reading in the forum seemed to understand that the best solution is to buy a new key every two years in order to be "permanently" under warranty. In this way you will not incur the payment of 20 euros per license, plus the cost of new key, in case of failure. But it would be easier to have a proposal for extension of warranty for the key (annual, biennial ...?) for a reasonable fee (the cost of the new key .. for example). This would avoid the costs of transport, management and so on.

Sod the buying-a-new-key-every-2-years idea!

The key should be a lot sturdier (metallic maybe) to begin with, and perhaps sporting two small memory cards inside (somehow physically inseparable but independant/discreet content-wise) in both of which identical licences will be stored, so either can be used in case of internal damage to one of them. Perhaps with USB connectors on both ends of the stick (covered of course for protection) in order to compensate for some possible physical damage on one end. That way, someone can either use the "2nd portion" of the key to continue working on a project with imminent deadline, or transfer the licences on a spare key (like the current ones), which will function while the primary key is sent back to VSL/Steinberg for repair. It goes without saying that transferring the licenses from the primary to a secondary key will erase the contents of both memory-cards, in order to impede piracy.

Any thoughts?

If you can't notate/MIDI it yourself, it's NOT your music!

Well,

I thought the idea behide copy protection is to loose a minimal amount of money due to unlicensed usage. That on the other hand should mean, that the company that makes use of copy protection earns good money. Therefore it seems quite strange to me that there are high service costs for getting malfunctioning copy protection working again. a copy protection that makes you pay twice and more often seems only good for the producer of the copy protection - hardly for the customer and in a limited fashion for the content/software producer.

So, what is in for the honest customer - she has to live with the daily hassles of copy protection and in case of malfunctioning copy protection hardware she has to pay a high service fee.

the hardware of the key - well, compared to some other keys, although they got better over the last years, syncrosoft keys still feel quite economic and non-durable.(e.g. Logic key or that formerly used by YellowTools). But I do think that a serious solution to this problem comes with hardware - we are living in 2012 - we have clouds, databases, mobile devices, CRM, networks, remote sessions, tracking technologies, GPS, etc. iLok has a more reasonable license management since years or decades. A company like VSL, that makes great and innovative software products like VI Pro, VE Pro and MIR - uses copy protection technology that requires you do send a key with traditional mail - seems strange.

And they are not alone - Steinberg (a company owned by Yamaha!), eager to be innovative, does the same thing. Maybe the new copy protection scheme by Plugin Alliance is something useful and will replace those dated copy protection technologies from the last millenium.

best

Fingerprint readers? No thanks. I implemented a laptop fingerprint security policy at work a couple of years ago. One weekend in the garden or sanding some timber and oops, not working - and that is using a multiple finger set up! Nice in theory but......
