1.Unable to see instances of Synchron Player in VEPro 1/18/2021 7:17:37 PM

Thanks Paul,

I am using VE Pro 7, 7.0.1056 - May 20 - 2020 version, which I think is the latest?

My OS is OSX 10.14.6

I will try to make a little movie of what I'm experiencing and send it along!

2.Unable to see instances of Synchron Player in VEPro 1/11/2021 5:14:28 PM

I am having a strange problem where I can't actually see an instance of the Synchron player from within VE Pro. That is to say, if I create a new channel w/ synchron, I can see it at first and I can load a patch or a preset, and it plays fine. But shortly thereafter, in almost every case, I can't bring up the player screen again. I click on it and nothing happens, even though playback continues to work.

VI players and Kontakt etc. all open up just fine and with no issue.

What could this be?

3."Synchron Library Installer" is ridiculously, brokenly slow 4/18/2020 3:20:30 PM

Ah...

Interesting! They're the same type of drive, but it's true, the one I am loading onto is formatted to EXFat.

Ach... at 71% is it worth stopping, clearing the drive, reformatting, reloading, and starting over? (I am guessing... yes)

4."Synchron Library Installer" is ridiculously, brokenly slow 4/18/2020 12:15:06 PM
It’s not the download but the install that’s taking so long. Download is complete, but it’s been installing 12 hours now and is at 59%.
5."Synchron Library Installer" is ridiculously, brokenly slow 4/18/2020 2:33:49 AM

Just chiming in on this thread - bought Sychronized solo strings today, and am experiencing a ridiculously slow install (as in, at this rate, this will take the entire weekend).

I'm on a 2018 Macbook pro 13", w/ two external SSDs. I've installed tons of VI libraries, and also a few Synchron ones (Epic Orchestra, and a couple of the Big Bangs) and Install was always a quick affair.

I've seen a few posts on this, and was just wondering if there was a solution or at least some state-of-the-art troubleshooting tips?

6.Vastly different load times on two different machines 9/24/2019 6:14:06 PM

Greetings,

I'm hoping I can get some advice on why I'm experiencing radically different load times loading the same VE Pro 7 project on two different machines. It's a full orchestra template, using almost all VI libraries (but with a few others as well).

The fast machine: 2018 macbook pro 13" 2,7 GHz Intel core i7, 16gb ram, OS X 10.13.16 [loads in about a minute or less]

The slow machine: iMac 2017 retina 5k i5, 32gb ram OS X 10.13.5 [takes over five minutes to load]

Both computers are using 1gb SSDs (not the same drive, but basically one is a clone of the other). I know the iMac has a slower processor, but it also has more ram and the SSDs are equivalent. Is there a way for me to determine just what is making the load time so dramatically longer there?

Thanks!

7.Is it possible to view multiple instances of VI Pro simultaneously in VE Pro? 10/21/2018 12:23:00 AM

Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

I'd like to be able to have 3 or 4 VI Pro instances visible to me in a single VE Pro instance. I am watching articulations switch w/ a Logic file, and it would be helpful if I could watch the whole quartet at the same time.

Thanks!

8.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 8/7/2018 4:30:47 AM
Sorry for my slow response! I made a major breakthrough tonight. The problem is specifically tied to my use of Vienna Event Input. If I eliminate the use of Vienna Event Input, the problem seems to go away. I have not uet tried creatiing a project that includes all of my instruments. Since I need more than 16 channels, it means I’ll need two onstances of Vienna Ensemble Pro, which is a bummer (I like being able to have all of my instruments on one board, so to speak, which I can do bu combining VE Pro w Event Input.

A search reveals that others have had stuck note issues w Event Input. It still doesn’t explain why some versions of the file work fine and others don’t, or why ai never had this problem on my MacBook Pro. Baby steps, but at least some progress!

9.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/31/2018 2:12:05 PM

I am keeping this thread alive just in case anyone stumbles on it and has relevant info - I've now written to VSL tech support as well. New clues:

1) in my latest Finale file (I make a new one each day I work), my fix of playing the Garritan only file has stopped working.

2) if I go back to a version from several days ago, it works fine.

3) have confirmed that all samples are fully loaded.

4) The weirdest thing: If I have both the old and the new Finale file open, and toggle between them, auditioning a single instrument, the issues are there when I'm on the new file, and not when I'm on the old. For instance, if I position speedy in the cello part and play on my midi keyboard, if I'm in the new file, I get stuck notes, missing notes etc. Playback is just as erratic as when I actually have Finale play the score. But when I go to the older file, w/o touching the VE Pro project, and position in the cello, playback is perfect - no stuck or missing notes.

Item 4 seems particularly important to me - but I'm not sure what to make of it.

10.?Any VSL updates for Finale 25 Human Playback preferences in the pipeline? 7/27/2018 1:43:39 PM

Interesting discussion.

It strikes me as too bad that Finale really seems to have very little interest in optimizing their program for use with non-Garritan libraries. I bought Dorico this year, but am still using Finale as Dorico (2.0) still has some major issues for me (no swing feel; limited control of velocity, even though they have a piano-roll editor).

In Finale, I've managed to have a lot of success using keyboard maestro (I'm sure any other keyboard shortcut prog. would work) in combination with the midi tool. I have various macros programmed to adjust velocity, y axis, slot crossfade etc. It can be pretty quick when it's working - unfortunately their visual feedback (Finale's) is archaic, so it's time consuming to see what's already been entered.

It is a real bummer that the custom text triggering doesn't work better than it does. I do find that VI Pro makes good HP playback possible, and I've never used the VSL Finale matrices. I make my own (I mostly don't use the SE libraries anymore either), but it doesn require a lot of hands-on tweaking, some of which can be done relatively quickly on the fly. For instance, I usually have a layer of the matrix dedicated to the various performance repeat patches (legato, staccato, etc.). If I have 4 instruments playing a bunch of repeated notes, I can highlight all the notes, and with little more than a push of a button move their instruments to the appropriate level on the Y matrix. I find the repeated note patches make a huge difference in realistic playback.

11.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/26/2018 4:11:58 PM

Here's one more weird twist.

I think I've found a way to get playback right. I now have two versions of the piece, one that is set up for Vienna Ensemble Pro playback, and one that just uses Finale Garritan built-in.

I've discovered that if I close out of the Vienna Ensemble version (but keep VE Pro open with the instruments still loaded), then load the Garritan version and play for a little bit, and then close that and re-open the VE Pro version of the Finale file, playback is perfect.

Have only had this work twice, but it's two out of two (after nothing else could stop the sticking notes, weird keyswitch info, and...I'm also noticing...weird controller data).

12.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/26/2018 3:09:36 PM

Following up with an update - my troubles persist.

1) If I replace Vienna Ensemble pro with just the Finale Garritan sounds (hosted in Finale) all troubles go away. (but the sound is gross!)

2) I don't think it has to do with loading samples. If I have the Vienna Ensemble Pro project loaded, with Finale playback working fine, and then I close and reopen Finale, the playback is wrecked most of the time, even though the samples are already loaded.

3) I'm noticing worse problems, when the playback isn't working, than just sticking notes. For instance, articulation switching doesn't work properly during those times. Legato notes play back staccato etc. (and I am 1000% sure my hp playback preferences are correct and synced in w/ my VI Pro matrices, all of which I made myself).

I still haven't figured out what it is that causes Finale to sit up and fly right. Sometimes playback works right from the start, but more often than not it's deeply messed up at first, and then eventually, somehow, normalizes. Once it's right, it's VERY right. Crisp, clear, all articulations perfect, no sticking notes. In other words, there isn't really a gray area, it's either deeply wrong or PERFECT.

13.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/25/2018 3:13:21 AM

Thanks Ariam,

I think you are onto something with the samples not being fully loaded. Generally letting the file play makes it go smoothly.

I was running Finale, VE Pro, and a full orchestra template (over 50 channels in VE Pro) on my 16gb 2014 MacBook pro, with only minimal issue, so I'm hoping the iMac can handle it!! We'll see.

Will report back when I have more definitive news - thanks for your input!

14.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/24/2018 3:03:55 AM

Thanks Ariam,

I will work through these suggestions. I do have a good external SSD where all my VSL samples are. As for my interface - I sort of am not really using one now... I am going out from my computer into a Schiit Modi DAC, and then into a Magni 2 headphone amp. I don't think I have an option to set the latency on there - never thought about it until now.

I will double check w/ the Finale playback.

What's so strange, though, is that the problem is there, awfully, and then it isn't. Like if I play around with the file enough, it eventually stops happening, and then playback is perfect - crystal clear, no problems. But a fresh reboot doesn't achieve this result. If I scan around in the piece, eventually it works out. Hope it's not some weird compatability thing.

I also did note that when it's playing perfectly, my CPU is also maxed out, according to Activity Monitor, both by Vienna Ensemble Pro and Finale. That's no different than what I've always seen (though I might have hoped it'd be a little less extreme on the new machine)

15.Strange, inconsistent playback in Finale and VE Pro 7/23/2018 9:17:22 PM

I have recently switched computers. I now have a 2017 iMac, 32gb ram, running OSX10.13.5. I'm using Finale with Vienna Ensemble Pro, and a relatively small template (8 instruments plus percussion).

My problem is that I am suddenly getting very inconsistent playback behavior. Sometimes I get a ton of stuck notes, incorrect articulations, dropped and missing notes, etc. And sometimes the playback is just fine - perfect. I just can't figure out how to determine this behavior or get the good playback. Rebooting makes no difference.

When I am getting the stuck notes, if I audition the instrument - i.e. put the cursor in an instrument's staff in finale and play back via my midi keyboard - I also get stuck notes. So if I just noodle around on, say, a flute stave, some notes will stick, some won't sound. Obviously I don't get this weird behavior when the file is playing back well.

I am really baffled. I can't imaging I am taxing my machine too much (it's an iMac Retina 5k, 27 inch, 2017 - 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5). When I watch the processor activity in Activity Monitor, Finale does jump to between 100 and 103%, but that is no different than any other time I've done that check (Finale always sends my machine past 100% - sometimes even more).

Please advise if you have any ideas. I hope eventually I will at least stumble on what behavior triggers the change from perfect to deeply flawed playback, but so far I haven't.

16.The violin 2 that comes w/ Solo Strings and Chamber Strings... 11/15/2017 12:05:15 PM
Paul

Just did a search through the manual and could find no mention at all of Violin 2. Can you give me apage #?

Thanks!

17.The violin 2 that comes w/ Solo Strings and Chamber Strings... 11/15/2017 11:53:23 AM
Thanks Paul

This is really great - even if only transposed.since I work a lot in notation software I didn't have that option for generating a 2nd violin, this makes a big difference.

Same thing in Chamber Strings? Or did I imagine that?

18.The violin 2 that comes w/ Solo Strings and Chamber Strings... 11/15/2017 4:33:46 AM

I am confused - possibly delighted.

I bought Solo Strings I full and the complete Chamber Strings bundle during the September sale. I haven't had a ton of time to work with them. Today I noticed that both have a bunch of Violin 2 articulations - all the basic ones, which is a big help to me since I do a lot of work directly with Finale.

I guess my question is - why is no mention of these patches made in any of the advertising/promotional literature or on-line content. There seems to be no listing of Violin 2 patches in the list of artics on the website.

A side question... am I either a) hallucinating these patches or b) did I actually buy Violin 2 and don't remember...?

Thanks for clearing this up. (I just discovered the patchest tonight, and have put them into a matrix but haven't had a chance to hear them in action)

19.How do I move my VSL instruments to a different drive? 11/10/2017 3:37:39 AM
Fantastic, thanks!
20.How do I move my VSL instruments to a different drive? 11/9/2017 7:20:15 PM

Greetings

Since my SSD drive failed, I have been redownloading and installing my instruments on my backup drive. When my replacement SSD drive comes, I'll want to move these instruments over to it.

How do I do this without actually having to reinstall?

thanks!

21.I guess my SSD just died 11/5/2017 1:41:02 AM

Thanks

Yes - I've tried multiple enclosures and cables. Initially I thought my Inatek enclosure or cable was failing, so I upgraded to a Plugable, different enclosure, different cable. Same result (I've tried both since the trouble started).

Hoping that my warranty on the SSD will cover me - we'll see! Just downloading the few libs I need to hold me over, and I'll run them off my backup drive I guess...

22.I guess my SSD just died 11/5/2017 1:06:52 AM

My internal SSD (in an external enclosure) seems to be dead. Computer reads it, but no contents, and disk utiltiy can't even verify it. It causes the machine to behave really badly.

Assuming it is toast, I guess I need to get a new one, and then... re-download all my software?

Is there by any chance a quick way of doing this with VSL? Or do I have to enter each download key, one at a time?

I always deleted the install files after I installed - I guess maybe that wasn't so smart?

And, while we're on the topic - any recommendations for a reliable SSD? I was using a cheap MyDigital 960GB, and it lasted me a little over a year.

23.Can't Stretch in VI Pro 10/20/2017 4:44:00 PM

Greetings,

Trying to use the Stretch feature without success. I know I've got the right slot selected, and I've watched the vid several times and understand how the feature works.

My problem: The render button never glows or becomes available to me. No matter what patch, and what curve I draw, I don't have the option to render.

I imagine I am missing something very basic?

Thanks!

24.Techniques for doubling instruments (2nd violins, 2nd tpt etc.) 10/6/2017 4:56:36 PM

Greetings

I know that the preferred technique for creating second sections or instruments out of a single patch is to record and then transpose.

I'm wondering if there are other techniques that would work in a more live situation. I am specifically interested in playback from a notation program. I have VI Pro and Chamber Strings, as well as other libraries where I'd like to double up.

I know I can do certain obvious things like detune, but I'm wondering if there are tricks for this situation.

Also, I'm mocking up an opera where I have lots of vocal soloists. I have Vienna solo voices, and wonder about tricks and technniques to make multiple instances of the same voice type (e.g. tenor) sound different.

Thanks!

25.Some woodwind advice 10/5/2017 3:56:26 PM

Yes - I agree with a lot of what you say. I am mostly using these sounds for mockups, and I'm the exception in that I do a lot of my work w samples in Finale (rather than a DAW), but I feel like I'm getting better and better at utilizing deeper sample sets.

One thing that's helped me? Jettisoning Spitfire and Berlin stuff from my template. I just made the switch from Berlin Woodwinds to VSL SE winds, and it just works and sounds better. But I do need more artics.

I have Spitfire Chamber Strings, but dealing with Kontakt and Spitfire's limited articulation switching options (Finale can't play nice with CC 32, so UACC isn't a real option) just grew too difficult. I bought Chamber Strings full and my life got a whole lot better.

I think I'll grab the full versions of the instruments I want, rather than the bundle. I'll get fewer instruments, but I want French oboe and not Viennese, and I have to suspect that Flute 1 is better than 2...

I do think the SE instruments are pretty great for the price, and they've definitely worked well enough to show me that I want the real things!

Thanks for your thoughts.
