I'm currently running VSL pro cube/ performance split across 8 Pcs running GS3...can anyone tell me if is it worth upgrading to vienna instruments and going down the VST route?

Hi and welcome cb Smile,

there are many reasons that speak for an upgrade. I´m sure that you will get more opinions, but I´d like to start with the following:

First of all, the Vienna Instruments themselves are very comfortable to handle.

They can load double the samples GS can load with the same amount of RAM, and they will also work with more than 1.7 GB of RAM.

Now, with the Vienna Ensemble, you can use the Vienna Instruments on 64 bit PC´s, we have loaded more than 100.000 Samples on one machine (8GB RAM), and you can use 16 GB of RAM also... we are waiting for RAM sticks to arrive soon.

My suggestion is to pick ONE Vienna Instruments collection, e.g., the Special Edition, to check out the Vienna Instruments.

Your price is 505 US $ instead of 1040 US $ (as you have already licensed the Pro Edition).

Of course you will get discount on other VI Collections as well.

Hope that helps!

Best,

Paul

I have one installation of GS2.5 and three of GS3, and haven't used any of them since VI was released nearly two years ago. If you are into sample editing then you will still need them, but if not, I would suggest that you upgrade to VI, get GVI and dump GS3.

I have been working on VSL pro edition 3 years now. All samples are on a slave PC with GS3 reached through MOL from DAW running Cubase 4.

IF I upgrade to VI,

  • how will the instruments be handled?
  • is it the same samples triggered by VI as originally in GS3?
  • I want to keep the instruments at the slave PC to save CPU usage on DAW
  • what would the price be for strings and woodwinds (since I already have lincense to Pro orchestral cube)

Thanks for your kind reply,

best regards

- how will the instruments be handled?

hmm, i don't understand the question, but IMO easier than with GS

- is it the same samples triggered by VI as originally in GS3?

not literally, all samples from the pro edition are in the respective VIs though 24 bit and the mapping differs (no more limitation of layers)

- I want to keep the instruments at the slave PC to save CPU usage on DAW

yes, MOL triggers VI/VE stand-alone, audio output goes back to DAW

- what would the price be for strings and woodwinds (since I already have lincense to Pro orchestral cube)

please go to the respective product pages, login and look for *your price*

Just started the major upgrade to VIs.

I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my existing (8)PCs to dual core/64 bit or just add extra RAM(4Gb per machine)

Can anyone tell me whether:
i)VE can load more than 1.7GB on a PC Windows XP32 bit system / 4Gb RAM without the need to have the 3GB switch / LAA hack descibed ?

ii) can you load VE/ tascam GVI on the same machine?

iii) the maximum loading for VE on a 64 bit dual core pc with 4 or 8Gb Ram

Thanks

Thanks for valuable info so far. New question;

How does DAW PC communicate with slave PC running Vienna Ensemble; throug MOL? Through FX-teleport? I would prefer FX-T to avoid house-clock system setup.

Would it be possible to run Vienna Instruments and Gigapulse VST on the same slave PC? (routing VI out to Gigapulse in and then back through audiocard to DAW)

thanks, Jorgen.

Well, it looks like you're asking this question at the right time. There are threads in the Vienna Instruments forum that state that Vienna Ensemble 3 (we're currently on version 2) will be able to route MIDI to and audio back from slave machines - if this turns out to be the case then your life will be made considerably easier!

Gigapulse VST should work with VE as a plugin AFAIK...

Martin
