Hello ardvaark,

the FREE orchestral samples (7GB) that Native Instruments included about 4 years ago in Kontakt 2 and later Kontakt 3 are the same samples . We simply provided Native Instruments with the samples, they put together the sounds themselves - so the best idea is to ask Native Instruments directly about a content list.

All in all, the small free VSL Kontakt orchestra is less than a 10th the size of the Special Edition - which comes with it´s own dedicated player, the Vienna Instruments (which, in turn, is for free).

So you can basically choose between some free samples with a sample player (Kontakt2&3) or MANY samples with a free Sample Player (Special Edition).

It really depends on what you´re trying to do - if you really want to get into virtual orchestration, the Special Edition is a great start. Here are some Video Tutorials.

Best,

Paul

Hi,

Just to let you know that...

I started 2 or 3 years ago trying virtual orchestra with Kontakt 2... 2.5...

So,

I decided to get Special Edition...

I'm not using Kontakt any more!

VSL Special Edition is simply the best basic virtual orchestra in the world...

If you thinks spend money take time and get SE...

I have try Garritan, Symphonic Orchestra MOTU and Kontakt... $$$

Does not worth....

Put your money on the real thing...! SE

Oh... The VI and VE player is simple and effectiv a real tool for composer!

Hope to help

Sincerely

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the Kontact 2 and 3 VSL samples from the old Horizon series which were 16 bit as opposed to the 24 bit samples currently standard with VSL.
