I was bummed to realized that the Special Edition (standard version)
doesn’t do trills – that’s one thing I need for trumpets to
get that Tito Puente latin brass sound.

The product combinations are really confusing
to me. To get trumpets that do trills would it be
cheapest for me to:

Buy a more deluxe version of the Special edition (if so, which one)?
Download some trumpets that have trills and other advanced articulations

I also need horn falls (like with big band sounds). I’m trying to achieve
that big band or 60’s spy soundtrack sound.

Please advise. I have very limited funds and really need specific
advice in this matter.

Thank you,
Robert

You raise some interesting questions and there are no easy answers.

If you want trills, Special Edition Plus has them, as does the full version of VSL Brass 1 & 2. But keep in mind that VSL, though quite versatile, is a Viennese *classical* orchestra. The Tito Puente-style trills you want are the result of a very different sort of mouth piece, a very different instrument, and a style of playing that is at once virtuosic but arguably less finessed than that which one might find in VSL. It may be a question of culture and style.

Doits and fall-offs will more likely be found in some other collection. Broadway Big Band (Sonivox-Fable Sounds) is a very different library. But it might help to expand your stylistic options.

The issue in all cases is that what you want requires some cash outlay, which is a commitment that must be weighed against how badly (and how quickly) you need to have access to these sounds.

I really appreciate your reply. I suspected this was the case (VI would be best for the more symphonic sounding stuff I need). Thing is I've had trouble even finding alternatives (searched the web and asked the music store and friends). Your recommendation of the Broadway Big Band (Sonivox-Fable Sounds) sounds is really appreciated and I would appreciate any other recommendations you may have. As long as it isn't too pricey (running thousands of dollars) I can afford it, might just have to save up for a couple months.

So, any other software you know of (big band or latin)?

Thanks a million!

Listened to demos of the Broadway Big Band (Sonivox-Fable Sounds) and sounds great. May be beyond my price range. At this point I'd be happy to find good sounds (a sample library) that I could manipulate if not a full software package like Broadway Big Band (Sonivox-Fable Sounds).

Any ideas!

Thanks,
Robert

I would say that for the style of music that you are after, you should check out The Trumpet from samplemodeling.

I was just thinking about Samplemodeling.

Another one which may be worth a look would some of the stuff from Ueberschall Liquid Horn Section. I don't know about the trills, specifically on this one. Best Service's Latin World might be another consideration, and perhaps even closer to what you're looking for.

Hmm-- the demo is actually pretty good to my ears-- I might have to pick this one up myself! Wink
