Hi,

I have some general questions about VE Pro, running on a Slave Computer, connected via Ethernet to ProTools... It works, but there are the following questions... Perhaps you can help easy. I use Kontakt 4 as the main sampling sound source:

What´s the main difference between VE Pro Standalone and Server... Or, where´s the sense to use the standalone Version (sorry, if the question seems to be really stupid)...?

How do I control Latency in VE Pro Server... ( I know, that you can handle in the plugIn Window), is there a possibility in the "SlaveSoftware" also?

How can I connect more than 16 MIDI Channels into Kontakt 4. Or is it just possible to put in 1 Kontakt with 16 MIDI Channels?

Would be really nice to get some help in this questions... Thanks a lot

Hello Chris, I'm relatively new to the VSL and VE Pro world but I've spent quite a bit of time mucking about with it now so I hope my answers are roughly right!

Standalone - I think this is mainly useful just for when you want to host an instrument without a DAW. For example, Omnisphere does not have a standalone version, so you could host in VE Pro instead. I think for all DAW uses, you go via the server(s) - the exception I guess would be if you used 3rd party midi (and audio?) routing, but more on this below.

I think the only latency control is on the plugin window.

The VST3 plugin allows multiple streams of 16 channels, but the normal VST version (and, I think, AU) only allows for one stream of 16 channels. So you'll need a second instance of VE Pro if you want more than 16 channels. Alternatively, you could use a 3rd party midi patch utility. This wasn't successful for me - I used Midi Yoke - although it technically worked, I got huge latency issues with it, and it generally seemed less stable and responsive. Individual instances have very little additional RAM hit and seemingly no effect on CPU or latency, so that's the way to go I think.

I'm sure someone will put me right if I got anything wrong - good luck!

Thanks noiseboyuk...

The difference between the Server and the standalone Version is total clear now.. thanks!

But latency... Yes. In the PlugIn Window you can find the possibilities (1 or 2 buffers)...But the normal level, which is normally set in the AUDIO Drivers of a AudioInterface.... (and in the standalone also, but just to use with the used audiosystem). Is there a possibility to set the "global" latency..... cause in Kontakt I can´t find any parameters...

The 16 MIDI Channel: I know, that RTAS allows 32 Ports with 16 Channels, so 512 Channels in one instance.... But the point is, can I route for example Port 1(16 Channels) and Port 2 (16 Channels) to one Instrument like Kontakt, which "normally" allows 64 Channels...?

Thanks again for you help!!!

Best

Chris

I don't think that's correct. AFAIK the VST2 MIDI spec only allows for 16 channels per instance, and Kontakt is a VST2 plug.

However, you can load a fair number of Kontakts in one VST3 instance of VE Pro, so you have access to 512 channels in one instance of VE Pro.
