Just trying to set up my new special edition pack for recording orchestral pieces in Logic, and I'm confused over whether I should assign a new instance of VI to 20 or so software tracks, or create 2 or 3 multi instruments and run a handful of instances of VE and separate them into 20 MIDI tracks. Is there advantages and disadvantages to doing both?

Take this as my own personnal opinion...

Using VE:

-you can run 64bit VI plugins inside a 32 host

-better overall performance

-possibility to load sounds on a second computer (VE Pro only)

-you may want to add more latency (1x or 2x) on the server to load more data

-no freeze track if you use multi-outputs

-no bounce in place when using midi tracks in logic

-no 32 bit plugins inside 64 bit server and vice-versa

-always have to switch application to edit sounds

-i found difficult to deal with a lots of aux tracks in Logic compared to other DAW. I usualy route each instrument on a separate output.

Using VI:

-better to use it in 64 bit mode inside Logic

-you can freeze tracks

-you can bounce in place

-you can apply 64 and 32 bit plugin with the bridge in Logic

-you can recall channel strips

-a bit more intensive on CPU and RAM

-no power pan if you don't have Vienna Suite

I prefer using VI when possible. But on large orchestra project, I load the strings section on VE Pro on a second computer. If you are limited by RAM or CPU, go with VE.
