I would find it extremely helpful when creating matrices if row and column labels were made available. By this I mean cells to the left of rows and above columns that we used not for sample content but for user-entered labels that could identify the significance of a column or row.

As I see it this would have at least two benefits:

First, it would help with organizing matrices in some meaningful way.

Second, it would help identify the contents of cells. Since we only have four characters to identify a cell's contents, labels could be used to overcome this limitation.

For example, I am currently working on a new string matrix that will group certain categories of playing techniques into rows. It would be helpful if I could label each category to the left of it's row. I could at some point decide I need a matrix which requires column labels instead, or even both row and column labels.  Having labels would help me keep my matrix visibly organized.

Also, if I have a row labeled Fast Repetitions, then each cell could be named by the BPM. If I have a row labelled mutes, I could name the cells Sus, Det, Trem and not be confused as to whether these were Long Note patches.

Does this make sense, and would anyone else find this a helpful feature? I realize screen real estate is limited, a consideration that would mitigate against my suggestion.

That's a great idea! I'd love to have labels added to matrices. Though there isn't much space above or to the left of a matrice, a good solution would be to have the text boxes only show the first few words in them, however when you hover your mouse over the text box, it would display the full contents of the label. Now we'd be better organized and clutter free

+1 for this feature request!

Happy New Year!

By sheer accident I discovered that I already have the ability to create row or column labels in VI Pro. Previously I had no idea that empty cells could be renamed!

So all you have to do is create an empty column either to the left or right extreme of the matrix, and rename the appropriate cell to label a row. The same can be done for labeling columns using an empty row top or bottom.

Bingo, Bango, Bongo! It's IN THERE!
