Here is a very useful little video by famous violinist Itzhak Perlman about 4 different varieties of vibrato. This would be a WONDERFUL addition to the VSL solo strings library!

The big problem for sampled Violin instruments is that vibrato is never just one of those 4 types. It is continually changing, according to the phrase and context, so for a purely sampled instrument this poses huge problems to solve.

It's true, and I know that VSL does not use the kind of artificial vibrato (or sordino, for that matter) that other libraries do. Do you think there could a purely sampled solution?

I think that whilst things could be improved, it is one of those things that in the end would need to have so many variations, it would be a case of diminishing returns. Even if it was possible, learning to use the instrument would become so complicated that most people would never get to grips with it.
The answer, I think is to find a way to cover most bases, and then invent an easy way (or some sort of look ahead AI) to switch between the articulations. All far beyond my skill-set...!

Yeah I think improvements within the player, VIP Pro in the case of VSL, is probably a more pragmatic approach then recording entirely new samples. As a non-string player I constantly struggle with solo string instruments in that I put two articulations together and am faced with the dillema, "is it even physically possible to play this?"
In some ways VSL has started this approach with things like time stretch, Humanize, and time offset which can give you subtle changes for a slight semblance of variety but there's always room for improvement.

Another thing to keep in mind - in the Baroque era THERE WAS NO VIBRATO. My main desire is to have less vibrato with strings.
