Hi,
I see that presets for the Synchron and Synchronized series have their Volume fader set to balance against the other presets, and the Expression fader always set to 127.
I usually keep Expression at a lower value (110) as a starting point, since this leave me freedom to boost the volume in particular passages. Having it already at maximum would only allow for fading out.
I don't know if I'm confused by the logarithmic scale, but to customize my presets I simply add to the Volume fader the same value I subtract from Expression (17). Apparently, the result is the same, but I'm asking to see if there are other issues, in the interlinking of the two controls, that I've not considered.

I would say it's ok to use them the way you do. One can't argue with the results if you are happy. But in terms of signal flow, Volume is followed by Expression. CC7 (Volume) changes your instrument's absolute volume, while CC11 (Expression) is a % of your Volume - from 100% down to 0%. That also means that using them interchangeable does result in slightly different curves. Try low settings for both faders individually and compare the output of the player. It's not identical.

Thank you Andi. Yes, this interconnection between Volume (absolute value) and Expression (relative to volume) is what troubles me. VSL presets volume is modeled (if I'm not wrong) on 'natural volume' tables, so until they are in the same relation the one the other, they should be fine. By increasing the Volume value, maybe I'm just giving Expression a shorter run toward the lower values, and some space over the nominal level.

I prefer to have CC7 vol always set to max 127 in order to have full dynamic range of each instrument. Then use CC11 and Velocity X-Fade for dynamics.
The problem is how to level-balance the whole orchestra, and VSL has done a nice thing by setting CC7 to approximate a level-balanced orchestra. This can be done alternatively with the audio fader instead of CC7, which I prefer.... or when I use MirPro, it could be done there too.... But if I don't use MirPro's natural volume, then obviously I have to level-balance it myself, but still I prefer to have each instrument with CC7 set to max for full dynamic range...then use CC11, etc...to adjust the player dynamics...and some audio fader will be adjusted outside of the instrument in order to level-balance the orchestra. 5,1 MacPro 12core X 3.46ghz, 128gb ram, RX580 video, OSX Catalina on OpenCore, VSL (almost everything), LogicPro, Cubase10, StudioOne, DP9, Reaper, Dorico, Finale, MuseScore, Notion6, EW Hollywood Orch, Kirk Hunter, GPO, much more..
