Greetings:
I'm writing percussion parts for the first time -- whoa... ;-)
In my current setup, I'm not seeing any playback of "hairpin" crescendos/diminuendos for rolls or fast notes (16th notes) -- using the text "cresc." doesn't work either. (See below for one screen shot example.) The samples play properly, and the marked dynamics are executed, but there are no changes across a roll playing across an entire measure.
I'm using the "Orchestras Unpitched Percussion/Snare Drum" from the "Add Instrument" dialog, and "VE Percussion/Drums" soundset. I've tried both "Snare Drum A" and "...B" from Sibelius/Percussion/Single Instruments...Full", and either work.
       Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeffrey!

You can find help about your problem in the Sibelius Integration tutorial at the following link:

As always, thanks for the quick response. I'm trying very hard to digest the optimization tips, and, of course, being as Sibelius protects me against MIDI knowledge, I'm struggling. I've done some experimenting, and have some questions.

  1. Do I need to "turn on" Velocity X-Fade" through the score, or is it possible to just turn it on directly in VIP in VE? I'm not having any luck using "~C28,0" or "~C28,127" to turn it off and on from within the score -- at least the run-time display of the VIP instrument doesn't show the change. But it seems like if I do the latter, the general dynamics delivered by Sibelius pretty much disappear.
  2. Do I need to have Velocity X-Fade associated with a controller switch?
  3. Is it advisable to use separate "hairpins" for the drum rolls? Seems like individual note hits work normally, but, musically, my intent is for crescendos to grow through a mixture of rolls and individual hits in some places.
  4. When using the cresc./dim. playback plugin with hairpins, do I send to C7 or C11?
  5. Although the plugin works reasonably well (still working with that, results aren't as pronounced as I'd like), I haven't seen any way to edit, or even highlight/delete the results once in. Any hints on that? (Yeah, that's a Sibelius question....)
  6. I'm also struggling a bit with cymbals. What's interesting is, "Cymbal A full" has pitch triggers at E6 and up which, when held, give a nice crescendo'd roll. I especially like the mallet ones. How does one trigger that from within the Sibelius score? (The "General optimization..." stuff doesn't mention cymbals at all.)

Does any other of your virtual instruments do all of this a bit more elegantly? ...Synchron, maybe?
Thanks again.

Hi Jeffrey!

Here are the answers to your questions.

1. If after turning on VelXF with "~C28,127" dynamics disappear, this means that the command has worked. Maybe you have forgotten to assign CC11 to the fader.

2. Yes, CC11.

3. Hairpins for single notes (and single rolls) will not work.

4. CC11

5. To see the MIDI commands, you have to show hidden objects.

6. How to trigger various cymbal articulations of the VI Percussion library is explained here:
https://www.vsl.info/en/tutorials/guides/sibelius-integration/percussion#cymbals

Pre-recorded crescendo rolls are hard to integrate in notation software, because they never have the correct length. Anyway, you can try a different approach of triggering percussion articulations. It is explained at the following link:
https://www.vsl.info/en/tutorials/guides/sibelius-integration/percussion#general-optimization-tips

Working with dynamic percussion rolls in Sibelius is easier with our Synchron Percussion libraries.

Best regards,

Andi
