Hi,
my first post on this forum. This may be a very simple and stupid question...

I use Finale2007. I recently purchased Kontakt2(full) and I'm trying to use the VSL samples (that comes with Kontakt) as much as I can.

However: I cannot extend or change the instrument ranges of the VSL instruments. Is it possible? (I followed the instructions in the manual but it didn't work. I could import a short sample though and extend the range with this one.)

Hi Albert

Yes you should be able to extend ranges on almost any instrument quite easily in Kontakt. The exception might be scripted instruments - I'm not sure if it works on the performance legato instruments. To extend the range:[list:84ac207180][*:84ac207180]Open the instrument in edit mode (click the wrench)
[*:84ac207180]Activate the Group Editor and activate the Edit All Groups button (so that it becomes red)
[*:84ac207180]In the mapping editor select the zones for the note you want to extend (in case several zones are mapped to the same note and frequency range it's safest to drag a selection rectangle around the range you want to select - that way you can select zones even if they are on top of each other).
[*:84ac207180]Stretch the samples.
[*:84ac207180]Click instrument options and make sure that the Key range is large enough.
[*:84ac207180]If you want to improve the sound quality of stretched zones you can change from HQI:standard to some better (but more cpu-heavy) setting in the Source section.[/list:u:84ac207180]I hope this helps.

Regards,
Nils

Hi Nils,
thanks! It was the part with selecting zones that I didn't do correctly. Now it's working. Big Smile

I'm glad that it worked out.

Well, neither actually. To the extent I work professionally with samples it is doing Kontakt scripting work (so ironically I have even less time to make music since I bought Kontakt).
How about you?

FST. I've been composing full time since I graduated (year 2000). I compose for live musicians and orchestras but in the last year I have become more and more interested in using software libraries (mainly as a composition tool). This is one of the reasons I bought Kontakt 2, partly because of the possibilty to alter the instruments to suit my needs but mostly because of the VSL library.

What I am looking for now is a software library that will work well as a plugin in Finale. I always thought that the VSL libraries were EXTREMELY expensive but I think this might not be the case. I looked at the OPUS Bundle for example and I think it was about 895€. Maybe a lot compared to Garritan or East West, but not a fortune compared to other parts of my equipment. But this is new territory for me so I will have to make some massive research... Smile
