My Giga machine failed and I had to get a new one built. Of course that always happens at the worst time.

Here are my specs:
Windows XP
Fully optimized as per Tascam recommendations
Giga 3.21 (latest version)
Intel Core Duo
6600 2.4 GHZ
2GB RAM
Asus P5B Deluxe Motherboard
Geforce 8800 GTX video card
Mia Sound card

I was getting the all too famous "unknown system error" while loading my setups. First I thought my sample data was corrupted. Calling Tascam support I was suggested to spent the next couple days re-installing my nearly 400GB of samples from the original disks! Gee, good thing I did not listen to that!

The problem is memory related. The default Windows XP gives me only 45% of RAM to load samples which is not enough to load my setups.

Using Preset 2 in Memory Configuration, the test shows the typical 66% of memory usable but I can only load up to about 14% and then I get that same error message. The Preset 3 and 4 crashes my PC.
Anybody ever had that problem? Are there any tweaks I could do manually?
I thought if anything a spanking new fast PC would give me more but I have no idea how to fix this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

-mb

This is all old, old, old news, I'm afraid. Look at the huge "sticky" titled XP and memory.

Believe me I have read thru the 25 pages! But I'm not trying to push my machine and overclock here. As I said my system shows I should be able to use 66% (using Giga memory config preset #2) but when I load samples I can't come anywhere close to that more like 14% of the memory before I get the "unknown system error" message.

I'm afraid that you will have to do the trial and error thing then. FWIW none of the presets ever worked on any of my systems.

Somebody on another forum mentionned it might be that my motherboard timings are too fast for my RAM and recommended using Prime95 to test it.
Looks pretty complicated to me. Anybody ever had to do this?

Learn about Prime95 here:

Which brings to mind did Tascam abandon GigaStudio in favor of GVI? I've been out of the loop on those rumors.

I mean it's long overdue for an update to address all the laborious requirements for installing it (i.e. the recommended sacrifice of a virgin goat) and the ubiquitous and finnicky RAM performance issues and limitations.

I sequence on the MAC and I like the idea of dedicating a computer for my samples it just seems they have the monopoly which makes them complacent.

Forget the rumors...

According to TASCAM, no they haven't abandoned anything. They are actively working on GS4, as well as the next-gen GVI, and even a Mac GVI...

For memory/U.S.E. issues, these two threads are a decent place to start (or continue) one's troubleshooting:
