  • First "Special Edition" demo online

Guy Bacos did a great potpourri for us, featuring a lot of different instruments, sections and styles.

    thanks a lot Guy

  • hmm... to me, the Overdrive in VSE remains a mystery.

I think I will buy VSE for the VI GUI, above all, but probably I won't trash Opus1&2.

Waiting for a more detailed list of articulations.

    Thank you.

  • Sorry to say,
(i usually am kind with eveybody, but too much is too much),
this demo is SO sickening with its OVERFED reverb....
It's really against nature IMHO to hear samples that wet, to the point they sound to my ears so artificial and unreal that I can't even tell any more if they are good or not....
(and yet I do own a lot of Horizon libs)
It is a first time ever for me : I did not even stand to hear the demo to its end and had to click the "stop" button in fear to no longer be interested in Special Edition! (and yet I'm a potential upgrader)....
This OVERVERBing is the same as the one which did stop me several weeks ago into the (nearly achieved) process of purchasing the VI Sax Lib, in this so called "Take Five" version so much drowned and sunken and mutilated into a violent maelstrom of excessive and undecent reverb that it had (for me) nothing to do any longer with jazz nor with sax...
Did the VSL team lose all good taste at all, or am I alone in this judgement and need to be cured from an unknown divastating aural disease ?

Ditto. The opening Grieg Concerto actually drowns in a verb sea...

  • I usually ignore these kind of comments, especially when they are ONLY negative. i perhaps over did it with reverb and I did send to herb a version with more adequate rev. However there is absolutely no reason what-so-ever to belittle a demo to the point that it makes you throw up, it's an honest mistake that could be addressed with a little more class. I am very proud of this demo and "Take Five" as well, if one will focus on the negativity only I feel sorry for that person.

  • Well I'm assuming that the version I just heard is the alternative version, 'cos it sounds very good to me.

    As an introduction,
I'll just say that I have little time to spend here, so i'll do that kind of responding just once, not twice.
And I do it only because of my big surprise about your (childish ?) reaction, because I did not intend any attack towards an individual, it was just a concern about what seems to me a lack of judgment from a professional company, which I like and respect, in the context of a promotional campaign for a new product..
Anyway, as someone who accepts to make his work public , you should be prepared to pick good and bad response with an equal temper....

Stay proud, I can live with that.
But please, don't feel sorry for me, I do well very with my "negativity".
And FYI, I can also spend a lot of time writing or saying good things for things that I love and find really deserving.

    ***

    Now :
I just wonder why somebody who feels so unconcerend by somebody else's judgment takes so pain into responding.
I just want to stress 2 things :
    1) I was cautious to spread enough "IMHOs" and "for me" in my statemetn to really make this judgment mine, and not some kind of absolute truth....
    2) I did not adress you presonnaly in fact (your lack of taste in reverb dosage is you problem, not mine). My concern was about some kind of possible "drifitng" of VSL team, which really disapointed me in only 2 occasions the "Take 5" demo, which really ended as a missed purchase (so far at least) and this one....
The fact that you are the creator is a side-point, so don't take it personnally.

  • The one I'm hearing is a bit too wet and dark but my overall impression is positive. [:D]

  • Em, right this demo sucks and "Take Five" is the worst sax demo ever made, I think you should be refunded all your money....and also financial compensation for the severe trauma you went through with the disappointing demos.

  • Guy, I understand that you're hurt right now but could you tell me which strings you used on the demo? Take this question as a positive remark from a guy who is more interested in getting the VSE after than before hearing the demo. [:)]

Once again, you get it all wrong :
there is absolutely no money involved,
I did NOT buy the VI Sax (98% because of Take Five, which let me with a bad taste and the "do I really want to spend that money for this ?" idea...).
I will *maybe* upgrade from Opus to Special Edition, but certainly not because of the current demo, more likely because of all the instrument which are not in Opus.
And for the trauma, you can do like me, I mean go to bed with a quiet mind, I don't think that this overdose of reverb will cause me any nightmare...
I can just recommend that you learn to accept those kind of comments, if you really want to live a good life AND make yur works public.
    have a good night,
    Peace,
    Cheers.

  • The funny thing is that according to Sir Sirbellog, the 2 worst demos in the history of this site are mine and then he has the nerve to tell me to not take it personally. Weird!

  • Take five was not the 1st sax demo on line, but the 1st "jazz" sax demo, the natural sound of the lib will not give the jazzy articulation for general leg sound you have to do additional work for that, I sweated trying to come close to that sound with all kind of ways, it gave something very acceptable, this was sort of my own way of extending the possibilities, and instead of being nicely credited for it I'm publicly accused of damaging VSL's demos reputation!! Some nerve!

I guess that once one gets a Knighthood, then the feelings of all the rest of us commoners don't matter. [8-)]

  • I actually thought this was a great demo. It shows just what VSE is capable of, and that was its' intention. I would say that the demo is one of the most realistic I've ever heard; VSE sounds like a great deal! I would probably buy it now, but I'm going to uni at the end of the year... [*-)]

  • Is this a marketing plot or what? Because now i want to listen to Take five! [:D]

Seriously Guy, don't worry about it, your demo is fine. Even if it's true it's a little too wet it wont affect my decision to buy it or not. In fact it had a rather good impression on me. The articulation list will seal the deal for me. Here is hopping it has as much articulation than Opus does?

  • I've just uploaded Guy's version with less reverb.

    best
    Herb

  • Yes this works a lot better. Can I now know which strings were used? [:D]

I pretty much used all the strings in Special Edition, for the sustained strings that was Appassionata, for the section that sounded like the old strings, that was portamento from string orchestra. Let me know if there's any specific places you want to know....

  • Thanks guys, it's hard to stay totally indifferent every time....
