  • Ableton Live 6 & VI : wich sampler or player ??

    Hello !

I'm planning to buy the chamber string for my Ableton Live 6.

I've read a bit everywhere that i will need a sampler to run my library (some like Kontakt 2, Halion or VI player)

Indeed im very new in that subject, as im a midi hardware fan and never run any synthetizer plugin before in my set up. Only real synthetizer.

I would like to have some very simple and concret answers about these questions :

What is the best sampler - player to run a VSL chamber string ?
Is it possible to sequence it without any sampler or player ? (i feel stupid about that question...)

    Thanx for your time !

  • sebastien, if you refer to chamber strings from the horizon series and the question is kontakt or halion, the answer IMO would be kontakt.
if you refer to chamber strings from the vienna instruments collection you have to use the VI player (comes with the library).
of course i'd recommend the vienna instruments chamber strings.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • exellent, i'm actually talking about chamber strings from the vienna instruments collection, so if it come with it own player, that even better [:)]

    thank you very much

  • Hi Sebastien,

just to avoid misunderstandings: The Vienna Instruments work as a standalone version as well as well (intended for live performances), but if you want to record what you actually played (in MIDI), it will be helpful to work with a sequencer.

The Vienna Instruments will work with all VST/AU compatible sequencers, and most people use the sequencers with a linear approach to sequencing (like Logic, Cubase, Digital Performer or Sonar, just to name the most common ones).

Live is a very pattern oriented sequencer.... the Vienna Instruments work with it, but it might not be what you´re looking for.

It really depends on what you want to do. The more information you can give us, the more efficiently we can assist you [:)]

  • Hello

Thanx for your answer, just want to add a little precision about Live. Most of the people think its only a pattern sequencer, wich in fact is half true. I'm using it as a normal sequencer, like Cubase or Logic, defenetly the same way of working, i actually never use the other function of Live wich is famous for...the LIVE !

I will record the music with midi, and live is compatible with VST of course.

I am not gonna work with it as a standalone instrument.

So if im correct, i just need to put the VI player in a midi track and record my midi notes in the sequencer of Live, then i can adjust midi notes, quantize etc for less straight music, more natural... [8-)]

Here a screen shot of the (official) remix i did for Justin Timberlake with live, as you can quickly see, it's also a linear sequencer, with some midi tracks, audio tracks, some automation etc : http://www.bytearray.org/justin/Justin.JPG

    Cheers

    [:D]

  • Hi Sebastien,

congrats on your RMX (though I haven´t heard it yet). Looks good [;)]

You are right, of course LIVE is also a linear sequencer, it´s just that I´m using it mostly for the great pattern functionality (just to have a balance, I guess).

And you´re right again, simply assign the Vienna Instruments as a VST instrument in Live, load the matrices or presets you need and play [:)]
