  • Orchestration question

    Hi,
I have a question for the expert orchestrators. I'm required by a client to write a dramatic piece in the style of Ride of the Valkyries. My question is: what technique does Wagner use to produce that fantastic, sparkling string arpeggio that serves as a backing to the main melody near the start of the piece, and how might one go about recreating this effect using VSL? (I own the Cube, unexpanded)
If that's an inadequete description of what I'm after, please let me know and I'll try to clarify further.
    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Best thing to do is to buy the score of the opera.

I have it but I'm not at home now to view.

To quickly answer the question, if I rememeber correctly, he's got a flurry of pickup notes played legato.

You can try using the fast legato patches to recreate the effect but I'm not sure if they are fast enough.

Another way might be to use portamento and cut off the starting note (using CC7 maybe to "mute" it) and only capture the slide and destination note.

    Hope that helps,
    David

PS: Not sure which library you have and if you have extended versions but you can try to use the chromatic/scalular runs.

  • Hi David,

Many thanks for the reply, useful advice there. I own the Cube, unextended.
