  • How to work around loading times?

When a song with multiple VI tracks loads up, OSX won't let me click on any other applications, not even my Firefox bookmarks. It's all greyed out. So rather than get other things done during those precious 5 minutes, I have no options other than stare at my screen watching them load up. Is there any way to fix this?

  • How about a sexy model for your desktop?

Eric - the Vienna Instruments demand _a lot_ from your computer, so it's maybe better to simply accept that this is not "just another application", but the main task for a machine during loading.

... people with a dedicated computer for office/internet/whatever have a clear edge over us poor guys with only one.

  • The VI does take quite a long time to load, understandable when you consider its capabilities. Nowadays I cope with this (and all such periods of enforced inactivity caused by my computer going into 'Don't disturb me, I'm busy' mode) by walking away and doing a five-minute job elsewhere. Sitting staring at an unchanging screen is definitely bad for morale! Also (on a more serious note), when working at the computer it is good practise to get up and walk about a bit every now and then, it helps counteract back-ache and other postural problems.

My template takes around 10 minutes to load, but once it is loaded, then that's done for the day. I usually load it up just before having breakfast, and it is then ready for action when I am...!

  • What about just leaving your computer on all the time? I don't do that I've heard it's no big deal.(except for power failures... [:'(] )

I'm afriad that I would prefer to switch off my farm at the end of each day in order to save on electicity, not just for the PCs, monitors and drives, but for the necessary air con as well.

  • This is a related issue so I'll just jump into this thread.

Loading Vienna Instruments and other virtual instruments takes ages with FX Teleport farms as every computer has to fully load the samples before the next one can even start loading. The VI should have an option for the kind of loading behaviour Toontrack's EZ Drummer has. EZ Drummer first loads the plugin and then tells the host that it's ready. Only after that it starts to load samples. This way all the computers can load simultaneously.

Of course this leads to every plugin on the same computer loading at the same time which means that it should be optional. This way the user could optimize the loading of his template.

I'm a bit of a beginner at all this, so this may be a dumb question but....

You say "then that's done for the day...". I assume you work on more than one sequencer project during that day? If so, does this mean that you have all your samples offloaded on separate computer(s)? If it was on the same computer you'd be loading them up again each time you loaded a new project file, no? My load times are long too (I use Cubase) and every time I switch songs I have to wait for everything to load all over again. Just wondering if there's a way to avoid it when you're on a single machine.

Or maybe there's no using a single machine when you're getting serious with VI... [:)]

    Thanks,
    Andy

I use a little dodge to keep the template loaded so that opening new projects takes around 30 to 40 seconds. If I have time I'll try to find the thread where I explained it properly. Theoretically it is possible to do on one machine, but I haven't tested it.
