  • favorite hard drive

I am about to get 3 hard drives for the remaining bays in my mac pro. What is the favorite drive these days for the sample libraries. I do a bit of actual recording in the room, so I want to avoid really loud drives. I've been told that the raptor can be pretty loud.

I was condsidering 3 western digital wd5000ks. Anyone have other suggestions?

    Much thanks!

  • If it helps, I've always used WDs and they have never let me down. I currently have two in my G5, plus 8 more in SATA enclosures, running audio, samples (including VSL of course) and for video editing too - all in the room with me and the noise isn't a problem at all. [:D]

  • Much thanks for the input! I guess my only question now is whether I should go for the Raptors. A lot of folks are telling me that some of the newer perpendicular large capacity drives almost match the performance of the Raptor, but also offer the capacity increase as well.

  • Count me in on Western Digital - I love them. I have three in my Intel Mac and they're solid.

  • Ciao, I have 10.000 r.p.m. SCSI and 7.200 Maxtor and WD serial ATA Hard disks, the difference is not that much.
But what I want too say to you. is: make a little hole in a wall of your room (just big enough for passing the cables) and put your PC(s) in the next-room. The noise-floor in the room (and the temperature) changes drammatically.

Then you can buy the noisest things
I'm so entusiast since I made it!
    Ciao
