    I am about to get 3 hard drives for the remaining bays in my mac pro. What is the favorite drive these days for the sample libraries. I do a bit of actual recording in the room, so I want to avoid really loud drives. I've been told that the raptor can be pretty loud.

    I was condsidering 3 western digital wd5000ks. Anyone have other suggestions?

    If it helps, I've always used WDs and they have never let me down. I currently have two in my G5, plus 8 more in SATA enclosures, running audio, samples (including VSL of course) and for video editing too - all in the room with me and the noise isn't a problem at all. [:D]

    Much thanks for the input! I guess my only question now is whether I should go for the Raptors. A lot of folks are telling me that some of the newer perpendicular large capacity drives almost match the performance of the Raptor, but also offer the capacity increase as well.

    Count me in on Western Digital - I love them. I have three in my Intel Mac and they're solid.

    Ciao, I have 10.000 r.p.m. SCSI and 7.200 Maxtor and WD serial ATA Hard disks, the difference is not that much.
    But what I want too say to you. is: make a little hole in a wall of your room (just big enough for passing the cables) and put your PC(s) in the next-room. The noise-floor in the room (and the temperature) changes drammatically.

    Then you can buy the noisest things
