    Interpretation: Unnamed Vesper Project

    Samples: Kontakt VSL bundle
    Sequencer: Cubase Studio 4
    Reverb: Rayspace

Hello everyone. I am what you call a future VSL user! Actually, I already have Kontakt so technically I am already a VSL user. (Kontakt comes bundled with 7 gigs of VSL samples) But I'll be getting a keyboard AND VSL SE in less than a month and I just want to share with you guyz some of my goals with this library.

Does anyone remember Ultima Online: Renaissance/Thrid Dawn? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Online

Ever since I played that game I've loved the music, not because of its sound (created with general midi instruments) but because of the composition. I've always wanted to recreate this music with a realistic orchestral sound. Of course as a beginner my mixing won't be up to par and my sound will lack realism, but that's ok for now! When I get VSL I will be recreating Ultima Online music. I'll be using Cubase and hopefully some libraries with Kontakt such as TrueStrike2 - http://projectsam.com/libraries_ext_02b.html#1

Ok, now I want to show you some Ultima Online midi.

Here are a few that I am excited to try recreating:
    Jhelom.MID
    Trinsic.MID
    Minoc.MID

My goal is that when the midi sound of Ultima Online wants to be dramatic I will make it even more dramatic with the realistic sound of VSL. When it wants to be beautiful I will make it more beautiful. When it wants to be powerful and exciting I want to make it even more powerful and exciting. When it wants to be cheesy and happy I want to make it more so!!!

  • Hey There,

That's some nice stuff you've done there. Nice sound and good orchestration. I haven't played that particular game but I'm rather fond of games myself. Jeremy Soule being one of my fave game music composers. .. Man I'd love to get him on the Podcast [:P] .. Anyways .. nicely done.

I think I have the same bundle of VSL sounds that you have on my Giga Studio 3 set.

I've just bought Cubase 4 .. well the update anyways .. cos Logic has been driving me nuts. (The update from SX1 isn't very much).

Anyways .. damn nice effort with this tune. I think the realism is actually very good you should be proud. The depth and overall reverb is nice and certainly the balance is good. No phasing problems. (Something I have all the damn time.)

If you'd like I'd love to get it on the VSL Podcast .. IT would also be good to get some info on how you mixed this as it is pretty good. I think I could certainly learn from your setup. Just let me know .. either PM me or e-mail.

I'm impressed .. what can I say better than that. Keep it up.

  • Wow herotyn, I forgot to e-mail you about this! Yes of course I want to be on the podcast.

But really there's not much to say about the mixing. I routed all the instruments into rayspace reverb and panned some of the instruments.

I'm sorry but I broke the rules [:O]ops: I'll see if I can describe it in more detail when I e-mail you.

  • Actually .. that's the reason there's plenty to say [[:D]].

You'd be surprised that sometimes when you're following the "Rule Book" .. it can really let you down. Some of my best mixes seem to be my early stuff .. when I didn't have a clue [:P] .. so if you can write me a description of the setup that you used I'm sure it would be of value to other users to know how you achieved your sound.

There's a quality about good volume .. and space .. and believability which is very hard to achieve. Your piece is pretty good on these stakes .. there is always room for improvement on anything but I'd say you're off to a good start .. and of course that's the point of the podcast .. to relay info from other composers so that others can learn from it.

Anyways .. if you can describe your mixer setup .. what kinds and how many busses are used .. what effects .. how you panned your sounds and such .. I think this is all useful. Send me a screenshot if you like .. I can put it on the podcast blog.

Anyways .. good stuff. Send me more [[:D]]

  • e-mail sent with a description, images, and an impulse response from rayspace (rayspace can create its own impulses from its engine, it doesn't use impulses however)

If you need any more info, let me know.
