We'll hopefully start our official Vienna Ensemble betatesting in few days.

There will be an anouncement in our forum similiar to our RTAS betatesting.

As sneak preview I'd like to give you some more detailed informations.

Please be aware, that any specifications I'm writing here can be changed for the final release.

32 Bit / 64 Bit

Vienna Ensemble will run on 32 and 64 Bit systems.

It is planned that windows XP 64 and and Vista 64 will be released on 25th October.

OSX Leopard 64 Bit version will be delayed a little.

The OSX 32-bit version releases on 25th Oct will work on Leopard.

Standalone / Plug In

Vienna Ensemble can be used as Standalone, but also used as plug in your host.

At the moment the plug in versions will be limited to 16 midichannels per Vienna Ensemble instance.

The standalon versions can handle multiple ports. (8 ports each 16 midichannels)

On my test system I have connected 4 midiports via Midi Over Lan, which can be selected fo each loaded instrument individually.

Audio Outputs

I'm running 16 outputs (8 stereo out) on my system, which can be set for each instrument individually

It is planned that Vienna Ensemble version will manage 32 stereo outputs.

Instrument switching

One of the main advanatges is the implementation of the Vienna Instruments into Vienna Ensemble.

That means, the Vienna Instruments GUI is coded directly into Ensemble.

So if you switch between different instruments, you don't have to open a VST plug, it's always there without any "opening latency", simply click on the desired track on the left panel.

Switching from Cello to Flute Track:

Power Panning

There are two pan modes included. Normal panning, where the volume of left or right channel is lowered, or power panning, where you don't loose any stereo informations.

Vienna Ensemble offers an easy to use interface, and you also get a good overview of the stereo positioning of all instruments.

Defining Play Ranges

With Vienna Ensemble you can set the play range for each instrument individually.

You can stack all string sections (violins, violas, cellos, basses) using four different instances,

but applying to all the same midichannel.

This enables you to setup your custom string-all patches using any articulation you like, even performance legato patches.

This looks fantastic Herb! And we'll have an RTAS version from kick-off? Working with the beta RTAS version in Pro Tools is an absolute joy for me after a year of fiddling around using a second less powerful Mac to run the VIs on then having to pipe everything backwards and forwards. Everything is now so much quicker and, above all, so much more enjoyable. After almost 3 weeks I've still had almost no problems with the beta version, it seems pretty stable on my system. Oh and I've done a lot more music as well, which is what it's all about.

Anyway, count me in for beta testing (Maya has details of my system), I can't wait to try this out!

Herb,

It's my understanding that in Logic 8 EXS can handle more than 3GB RAM. Also I'm led to believe that third-party virtual instruments may be able to do the same thing. Apple has said thay they've seeded manufacturers with advance copies of L8 in order to aid with this effort. This would seem to have neatly dovetailed with the development of VE.

Has VSL done this and is VE able to handle more than 3GB within Logic? Or will we necessarily have to additionally use the standalone version of VE (in this case on the same machine) along with the plugin to use more than 3GB on the same machine?

There are quite a few of us who are moving to Mac Pro shortly and this would be handy to know so we can decide if and how we need to break up our VSL libraries on two or more machines.

As a AU user, does it mean that with one click we open this whole window ?
How does it change from the actual guy version, it seems that it's perfect for a standalone use, but a few questions remains concerning the ease of use with Logic 8. Of course the multi instruments is a great news.

IMHO, blue, blue, blue, is too omnipresent, Mail iChat, Finder, the Apple Logo, QuickTIme, iTune, Folders,you website and now your design (I know, same color as the actual guy but much bigger)…we live in a blue's world (!)

It has been suggested that Logic is currently able to exceed 32 bit memory limits by treating each exs instance as a seperate app in terms of memory allocation. Therefore each EXS plug-in could load up to the 32 bit memory limits.

I suspect when Herb mentions Vienna Ensemble being 32 bit (in the Mac domain) for the near future will mean the 3GB limits will contiue even after Logics Leopard version surfaces.

I hope VSL can get round the additioal programming to create a 64 bit version as soon as....!

The instrument switching is such a huge time saver and workflow enhancer. Just great.

This is a major upgrade to the way we will work with VSL. Can't wait.

Hi

I was wondering, if you have your DAW on one machine and then put VE on another and connect by ethernet, do you still need midioverLan to connect to the VE? Also do I still need a audio card out of the VE machine and then and audio in on the DAW? Or will it be able to send the audio back and forth like the Muse receptor?

Good questions.

I guess that you will still need MOL and an audio card on the slave, unless you use FXT. If it did audio and MIDI over LAN, cross-platform I would have thought that VSL would have been trumpeting that fact by now. However, I have been known to be wrong.

BTW Does Receptor actually send audio? It never used to.

Yeah, it uses a protocol called uniwire. I was hoping VE had maybe written something like that. Any vienna people like to shed some light on the subject?
