  • EPIC Horns...How far away were the mics from the 8 horns during recording?

Hi Vienna, EPIC Horns...How far away were the mics from the 8 horns during recording? ......I am trying to determine if I need to add an Early reflection to make them sound circa 20feet away or not! (the 4 horns need this...but now I'm thinking the Epic Horns don't) please reply.... thanx, SvK

  • How much is "20 feet" for mere mortals? About 6 meters? Then the average distance of the Epic Horns was closer than that. HTH, /Dietz

  • Dietz .....how many meters were the mics away from the "Epic Horns" Dietz..... Also...with Apassionata Violins, does it stand to reason that they to do not need any additional Early Reflection Convo, since the section size is so big that the Mikes were plenty far away enough to not require any additional Early Reflections (instead just tails?) So to recap; Woodwinds: (add early reflections....to put proper back) Apass Violins (do NOT add early reflections....just tails) Epic Horns (do NOT add early reflections....just tails) thanx, SvK

  • Dietz, Or is my thinking skewed>>> EXAMPLE: (would I be right in doing this) 1) Set up a buss with Todd AO early reflection IR (no tail) set it to 100% wet 2) Invoke send knob on Epic Horns Stem (set to pre-fader @ 0db) 3) Pull down Epic Horns fader by circa 6 db So what I'm hearing is the Early Reflection IR 6db louder than the direct signal..... Is this right? SvK

  • Wait a moment - one after the other! :-)

I just talked to Michael Hula, the artistic director of the Vienna Symphonic Library, and he had the details at hand:

The whole horn group was about 5 meters in witdth. The microphone was about 4 meters to the closest player. In addition, it was brought to a height of about 3 meters above the floor.

Regarding the IR: It depends! You can't be sure that the level of an IR is a linear enevelope. It may happen that the reverb tail is actually louder as the early reflections, and it is not necessarily a normalized audio-file, so your "6 dB louder"-calculation is almost certainly flawed in real life. Let you ears (and some good meters!) judge.

Sending to the convolution reverb pre-fader is always a good idea, but it makes things a bit more challanging, balancing-wise. Apart from that, depending on the IR-set you use, it is quite possible that the maker or the respective IR didn't remove the direct signal component from the IR, so you have to be a bit cautious before you go into this. (... with AltiVerb and Audio Ease's own IR-sets, you're on the save side, though, as you can switch of the direct signal within the convolution path).

    HTH!

  • Dietz, Michael..... Thanx for your detailed responses ;-) My altiverb has direct sound set to off, tail is off, it's 100% wet , and Early Refelections remains on. Now Epic Horns stem is at 0db, it's send knob to Altiverb is set to 0d pre-fader. Now i start pulling down my EpicHorns fader until the ER is slightly louder than the Epic Horns. To get them 10 meters away instead of the built-in 4 meters. Correct? SvK

  • In short: Yes!

In the end, it's the same as always: If it sounds right, it is right. :-)

  • You're welcome! :-)

    All the best,
