    Greetings people,

    Just wondering if anyone has tried converting any VSL from Giga to Akai with Translator? I have tried some basic patches such as the 32mb Percussion Basic Set and Translator does the samples fine but crashes on the program. Since this .gig has no keyswitches or complex programming I would have thought it should work fine, but sadly translator crashes when it gets to the .gig program. Other similarly simple programs have the same effect. Has anyone else tried running VSL through Translator?

    Maybe this solution helps:

    Open the gigfile in giga editor. Select the basic instrument you want to convert. Right mouse click and select copy.

    Create a new empty instrument in giga editor. Insert the copied instrument and save the gigfile.

    You have now a basic gigfile without any dimension controllers.
    Then try to convert it to AKAI.
    Maybe the translation programm has less problems with this simple gigfile.

    I just gave your suggestion a try, but when attempting to save the pasted instrument, I keep getting the error "Warning: there are unassigned regions".

    Is there something else I have to do?

    Thanks for the info. I managed to save it out of Giga Edit, and then tried the translation again. It converts the samples fine but freezes when it tries to convert the program information.

    Sorry, that I can't check it out for you.
    The last time I worked with an AKAI is 7 years ago.

    Maybe someone else knows better translations programms?

    its possible that the unnasigned regions are causing some havoc in the translation process.

    Make sure you're copying the instrument and not any of the "blank instruments" that are being used as markers in gigastudio.

    There´s a donationware little app made by a kontakt user at the NI kontakt forum which automatically (just clicking) converts any gig file you choose into a single dimension stuff ready to import in Kontakt and I suppose other gig importing samplers. I bet you will be able to convert that to AKAI, though expect to spend some time reprograming.

    We'll be putting up some builds early next week that address the issue, also the issue with th naming.

    Richard, are you using the Mac version or PC version?

    As far as I know, AKAI supports only 8 (letters (strings) for namings.
    (Wav files and instrument names)
    How do the converters manage the string reduction.
    Maybe the reduction causes equal sample and instrument names, this could be the reason for the crashes.

    Most convertors deal with the name reduction with the Akai's well, because they have to - Akai's use the names as the referencing tool, in contrast to Giga which uses indexes (Sample 0, Sample 1, etc.)

    The common thing that keeps creeping up with certain Giga libraries is that the Giga names exceed 27 chars, which screws things up when you convert them to EXS and want to use them on a Mac. (I believe VSL was aware of this and worked it out beforehand).

    Akai's use 12 characters, and only a couple of the non-char type of symbols (#, -, etc.)

    However, the ultimate source of the crashes is likely something else. I like King's theory, but I want to check it out myself and be proof-positive.

    Hey, I like being a "Junior Member" - if you are an american, if you remember a board game called "Junior Executive" - well, it's sort of like that...

    Regarding Giga->Akai (I finally read the the messages in a clear concise way), they have been exposed to lots of particular edits for special purposes. I was working on it last week and I think it'd be OK with a build that's coming early next week.

    Best way to check, if unassigned regions causes the problem, is to extract an instrument without unassigned regions.

    For example a simple sfz or fp instrument.

    Open the gigfile which includes a sfz instrument in gigaeditor, select and copy the sfz out of the basic instruments sections.
    Create a new (empty) gigfile, and paste the sfz instrument and save it.
    Now you have a single velocity layer instrument.

    Generally all basic instruments which have 1, 2, or 4 velocity layers do not have any unassigned regions.

    Thanks to all for your most helpful advice and comments. I have another solution, to buy another 2 Giga engines! (though not the cheapest!) Having lots of fun here all the same.
