    Lost in the amazing thread started about piccalo runs was Herb's major annoucement.For those who did not have the time or patience for that thread, here it is. Herb, I hope you do not mind me reposting it here.

    [/quote]The official announcement of the upcoming Horizons will happen in a few weeks.
    But this time we don't make a big "suspense story" about the upcoming releases, therefore I can share some infos.

    1. The "French oboe"
    Extensive like our Vienna Oboe of the Pro Edition, but of course with a major focus on vibrato performances.
    There will be included two smaller bonus instruments:
    an english horn with vibrato performance legati,
    and an Eb clarinett.

    2. Chamber Strings
    Also a very voluminous release.
    6 Violins, 4 viola, 3 celli, 2 bassi.
    The major extensions here are "performance detaches" and "spicatti", (like our solo violin)

    3. 8 Horn section
    The performance legato costed a fortune. I don't like to count the recording sessions we've needed. This time the legatos are performed starting with B1!

    4. Woodwind ensembles
    3 flute, 3 oboes, 3 clarinettes, 3 bassoons

    5. Harps
    A dedicated harp release, including our Harp of the First/Pro Edition plus a new second harp.
    The 2nd harp does not have any glissandis, here we focused a little more on special playing techniques.
    Also the normal plugs do have 2 variations of each note (1+2).
    This release is dedicated to all scores, which need 2 harps performing.

    Is this an Opus 1 update for existing Opus owners or will it be an entirely new Horizon sample set?

    The Horizon Series is the best idea since sampling intervals. It's much more cost effective to purchase only the instruments you need. I would hate to see something like woodwind ensembles grouped with solo woodwinds and not be able to update one without the other. So keep those Horizon editions coming.

    When you guys mention 6 violins in the upcoming "Chamber Strings", do you mean that you recorded 6violins playing notes together (meaning that 1 note played on sampler = the sound of six violins).

    Or did you record the six violins by "pairs" thus making it for instance possible to play 3 different & independant parts (lines) together and retain full realism : the sound of 6 violins and not 18?

    Or maybe you recorded multiple setups, which would be quite terrific.Or even maybe you've found another solution. Or maybe this is a 'non-issue' I donno. [*-)]:

    Good idea you have. You could have desks 1, 2, and 3 playing seperately with a setup like that. Probably not what they're doing. The workaround would be grouping different solo strings but that would mean samples from other libraries. (I'm not familiar enough with VSL solo strings to know how many different solo vln sampls one might come up with.)

    I have just purchased the pro edition,...I got the cube for Giga, and the performance set for EXS. While the Flute and Clarinet legato instruments are really great (even though some of the lower Clarinet notes have a little too much breath in the sound for my liking-and I am a clarinet player), I find the performance legato oboe most disappointing. Why did the VSL team not use a vibrato oboe? While I can have a great deal of fun playing the legato flute and clarinet, I cannot say the same for the oboe.
    Who wants an oboe with no vibrato? I know it has its place, but surely it would have been better to use long notes with vibrato for this most expressive of instruments. To this end, I believe that a vibrato oboe performance legato instrument should be FREE for pro edition users, most of whom probably expected it to be a vibrato instrument in the first place. To have to spend MORE money to get this seems a little unreasonable. I basically love this library, but I suspect my DD library oboe will be getting used instead of this one. What do you think Herb?

    Sorry to keep harping on about the oboe.....I just checked your very informative instrument section, and under the oboe you say:

    The conservatoire oboe - better known as the French oboe - became internationally accepted as standard in the 20th century. The Viennese oboe, which is played exclusively in Vienna, has retained its particular sound and form since the time of Viennese Classicism and developed independently of the French oboe.

    I just wonder, if the French oboe is the accepted standard, why then go and use a Viennese instrument that doesn't sound like the oboes I'm sure the majority of us are used to and indeed want? I know you are recording the French oboe WITH vibrato as a Horizon product.....but really......this should be part of the pro edition. Anyone else agree?

    I have to say, however, that this library is generally fantastic, and I'm very glad I bought it.

    OK....I guess I asked for that one! [:)] ......however, are we to presume that you used a German clarinet rather than a French one? ....what about the Flute? It would be useful to know exactly the make of instruments used.....or have I missed that information somewhere? Anyhow, I don't want to seem pedantic....my original point was that I would imagine most people were expecting the standard French instrument......do the Vienna Symphony Orchestra use a Viennese oboe all the time? I suspect not.....but then I do not pretend to be an expert, so forgive me if I'm wrong. Actually.......I just realised....my original point was about a performance LEGATO instrument WITH VIBRATO!!.....this issue was a sidetrack - anyway, I'm just basically a bit upset that I'm going to have to spend more money to get the oboe sound I was originally expecting.....and to get a performance legato instrument with vibrato.....and I would expect most other people are the same.

    yes, they do.
    you don't get a job here in Vienna, if you don't play a Viennese oboe.
    The Viennese Oboe is generally performed without any vibrato.
    In Vienna's universities oboe vibrato is even not taught.
