  • Is there a VSL demo with Legato Portamento?

I came across an older post about VSL in the NS forum.

    The person asked

    @Another User said:

does anyone know if the legato-portamento is the arabian string sounds that you generally hear in soundtracks. i\\'ve been looking for these beautiful lush strings that kind of slide in movement if that makes any sense, and i\\'ve heard that they are legato-portamento strings. if someone could let me know if this is correct and also maybe some suggestions of the best samples for this sound. thanks

The reply was that VSL has these.

My question is first, is there a demo where I can hear this and second does Opus have this type of sound?

    Thank you,

  • I don't know if there are any demos, but as you may have observed from the articulation list Opus does have the legato forte portamento patch which the 1st edition and pro edition have too. So yes, if you're after that particular sound Opus will have it.

  • This may not be a great example, but I used legato portamento violins on a recent score for a 60 second television ad. I've made an MP3 and uploaded it to my .Mac Public folder:

    http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=storybrook&templatefn=FileSharing4.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.4.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en

It's inside the "VSL" folder. The leg-port part happens about halfway through the piece, after the big crescendo...and I only use it on a few intervals of the melody. But hopefully it can give you an idea of how it works in context.

I can't remember now exactly which EXS program I used, but it uses mod wheel to activate portamento, so you can play it in real time. Very musical.

  • Sharmy uses them a lot in his demos, you might look in this forum for some of them... Opus got them too (check articulation lists for which exactly), as the Pro and First Edition *Performance Sets* (not the "Cubes" or single section packages)...

    Hope this helps,

  • Thanks for the information everyone.

Fred, thanks for the mp3, it's a great demo! May I ask which VSL you used? It sounds lovely.

  • bluestar,

It's all done with Pro Edition. If it would be helpful, I'd be glad to restore the Logic song from my backup and give you details on specific EXS programs and articulations.

Thanks for the kind words. It's not a real exciting piece, compositionally, but it does what was needed for the spot.

    Hi Bluestar
Here you can hear a part with porta-legato (Chamber-Strings)

With Opus 1 you will have
    VI-14_perf_leg_p
    VI-14_perf_leg_f
    VI-14_perf_leg_f_porta (forte portamento)

    All the best
