  • Demo Review

    Hey all!

Here are a couple of demos I've done recently. I'd love suggestions. Composing is still fairly new to me.

  • yeah, I've put 7-Imagine-LukeHendrickson.wma on this forum before. 8-Imagine-LukeHendrickson.wma is new though.

Usually I key in each part through MIDI. Sometimes on supporting instruments I'll play more than one note at a time. (viola/cello) But not more than 2 or 3.

Which means these songs have a lot of tracks. Each one has between 40-50. Fortunately I have a pretty nice PC and my CPU is around 40% load.

  • I had a listen to both demos. They generally sound nice, although perhaps a little too drawn out, especially the second one. If there could be a little less repetition and more development/variation of the themes it might be more satisfying perhaps.

I thought the piano in the first demo was too forward in the mix. Since it seems to be more of a supporting part than a solo, I think in this case it could be blended in more. Also I think I would have liked a less brightly toned piano for this context.

I was intrigued by some of the percussive effects at about one minute into the first demo, and also in the second demo just before the end. I could not make out exactly what they were.

  • You're probably right about the themes being too drawn out. I need to work on coming up with different variations. Maybe something like a call and answer. (echo... alternating instruments and/or melodies)

The piano thing... It is a little loud in the mix. But my intention was to shock the listener. Also the reason for it being bright.

    The percussion...
On both songs, the percussion is from VSL (with effects though) I forget the exact names of the instruments.

Speaking of percussion.... Here is another demo that has an unusual use of rhythm towards the middle of the song. It was all VSL accept for a waterharp and various percussion elements from an ACID library (ethnic somthing?)
