  • Trying to figure out what my needs are.

Hi I have some questions. So I can figure out what will fit my needs.

1 I want to buy the strings from the symphonic edition. However, it sounds like it is pointless to really have those without the performance set? In otherwords I would have some very nice samples. By chance are there any sample mp3's of what things sound like with just the symphonic string samples - no performance set? This would really help me understand what my needs are. I need nice sounding strings, but I do not think I need as much detail as the performance set will offer me.

2 I looked at the horizons series, because this includes some samples and performance sets togeather?
All I need are strings (orchestral ensemble- to add to my compositions, I do not need solo strings etc. So here is where I get confused.
opus 1 the strings are from the symphonic library? the ensembles are 14 violins 10 violas etc?

Chamber strings - I do not think this would work for me because most of the time I just needs strings for an orchestral/symphonic sound more than 6 violins etc.

  • 1 It's not pointless to just purchase the Strings package, it "behaves" just as almost all other strings libraries out and can be used like them - however you have to be aware of the fact it doesn't come with the performance (legatos, portatos, repetitions, ...), files that that are typical for VSL. But also keep in mind you won't need just the performance files or using them all the time, you do need the others, too.

2 Opus 1 includes both, regular and performance elements, however isn't as detailed as the Pro Edition in choice of articulations and also only whole tone scale sampled. The difference is not so audible in a ensemble setting, check back with the articulation lists of both for details about the different articulations. Opus 1 is a derived set from the chromatically sampled Pro Edition samples (and therefore the same sections 14-10-...) , so you get the same quality with them. If you're budget is tight, I'd recommend getting Opus 1 to you, as you can upgrade later to Pro Edition when you got the money and you got a good start. Just listen to the Opus 1 demos around to get a clue what's possible with it.

Chamber Strings/Solo Strings may not be exactly what you're looking for if you want to go for symphonic, however keep in mind not only a set of their own but also great for layering with the big sections of Opus 1/Pro Edition to get another sound out of them (or for writing divisi parts).
