  • VSL 'cube' re-invents the wheel but offers little new

Just logged in after the countdown and am frankly quite disappointed with what is being put on offer.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is this simply not *just* the bundling of pro-edition and performance tool into a VSTi with VSL re-inventing their own sample engine rather than leveraging what is presumably quite a lot of good work in Kontakt and Halion to do that job for them?
I mean - it looks like a re-invention of the wheel to me...
Sample management - god - not this again - Ram save all over again... which sucks with workflow... this unloading/loading of samples should be hidden from the user by clever programming. e.g. lazily loading samples when they are used, unloading them when we detect that they have not been used for a while.
Better still, don't pre-load ANYTHING at all and have the entire VSL library at your disposal. Why do we have to have any pre-load? I notate my compositions and could quite happily deal with the latency of loading the samples from memory on demand... thus I could have as much as I wanted 'loaded'.
It is a shame that VSL are concentrating on re-inventing the sample engine wheel probably because of their worry about pirating the performance tool.
This above anything else has made me more interested in the developments at www.synful.com. There is something wrong about this complexity...
    Sorry...

This paragraph bears repeating over and over again until it gets done. [[;)]]
This would be enormously useful, and a much bigger step than any other in terms of sample playback functionality.

  • I posted this in another topic:

Clearly it made more sense for VSL to develop their own special VST/AU engine than to keep adapting to EXS24/Kontakt/Halion/etc etc

This way users of all apps and softsamplers simply buy into one format: the new Vienna Instruments. I imagine in the long run, this will allow them to release updates more frequently as all new patches work on all platforms.

Watch the videos. You get a LOT more than just the bundling you suggest. These instruments look amazing....

    Regards - Colin

  • I think this is a good development, provided its nice to work with.

It will surely benefit us users in the long run.

  • Hi paynterr - if VI takes off I guess there's not much need for a HALion 0 preload has been requested on cubase.net countless times.

Looks like VI does 0 preload if it can load each patch in <1s!

Now if only the price works out ok....

  • To address the original point. I guess it really depends on how much new sample material is being added. I mean the size of 550GB is impressive surely, but this is 24bit samples. That takes up more space.

So It really depends on what new material VSL presents us. We dont really know yet.

  • Hello, 550 GB but it seems to be compressed as if it was 16 bit if I've well read ...

  • Might be...

I think the 550gb are uncompressed. But could be cool if not [[:)]]

At any rate the new content really has to deliver

I cant wait to see what orchestral stings 2 is [[:)]]

  • Wasn't the Cube suppose to ship on a hard drive?

  • yeah... a few years ago [:D]

TBH it might still be the case. But it seems like it will be DVD's

  • Yes, you are right. In the past we've planned the SC as single product on harddisc - no modules, collections etc.

In the meantime we've learned that a lot of our customers prefer individual selections. Therefor we've splitted the SC into ten collections, which can be ordered individual, and therefore a harddisc solution didn't make sense any more.

    best
    Herb

  • It seems that in this meantime VSL is also learning some new things about what their customers prefer about this SC and what doesn't seem to make sense anymore to their loyal clientele.

    Clark

  • How long to decompress and load to hard disc and organise 550 GB from DVD??

And that is what 'sensible' users have always asked for - well done .

Fancy a game of golf now Herb?

Personally, I will be irritated if the strings are the same as before - although 24 bit may or may not make a difference to the mixed sound. Dunno. Being unable to download any of the videos at this time - I understand from a colleague that the Repetition now looks really good and intuitive.

  • Wow paul your really missing out. The videos are fantastic!

Quicktime 6 Christian - everytime I try and download they stick at about 30% - could be because there's alot of downloading going on, or because somethings wrong at this end. Shouldn't think it's that though.

  • Paul, are you downloading them or streaming them?

Have you tried right clicking on the links and selecting 'Save Target As.'

I had trouble streaming them, but downloading them allowed me to watch them.

I'm guessing your on Mac then? If not try the WMV files. You just HAVE to see these vids!

  • I've had no problem streaming on my office Mac Mini.I'm on QT 7:maybe that's your problem there, Paul. Gotta say: I'm very, very excited (in principle) by this new interface and its potential for networking. Looks like they've taken on board what people are asking for (with a little influence of the better features of Kontakt 2).The rep interface makes the whole process appear very facile and quick.

Maybe it's my imagination, but the interface demos seem to have taken the VSL instruments to a new level of realism. Some people have been griping about not enough new sounds: there seems to be an awful lot of new stuff to me (I'm particularly excited by the introduction of mordents); but then, I'll be going straight from the First Edition to the new Pro.

This new interface looks like the dog's wedding tackle to me.Sorry,Paul, haha!
