  • I thought SC was going to be released on hard drive...

(Sorry if this has been covered)

Some time ago, I recall that it was announced that SC was going to be released on hard drive. What happened to that idea? Installing SC is going to be a MONUMENTAL project (especially if files need to be unstuffed).

I'm thinking that anyone who buys this is going to want to buy a big FW hard drive and install the entire library on it, keeping it off-line as a safety in case other drives crash. Having to completely reinstall from DVD in the middle of a project could be a disaster. This will be possible, correct? In other words, there isn't some CP that would prevent copying from one drive to another, is there?

  • There's a post from Herb somewhere stating that they were going to offer a HD version but with the arrival of the VI VST they've gone back to DVDs instead.

AFAIK there is no protection stopping you copying the data files anywhere you want the only protection is for the VST itself - which you will need the dongle to run.

  • Actually I think VSL perhaps could work out some scheme with their dealers allowing them to store the installation files as ISO's on a harddrive to be read by an DVD emulation program that can mount ISO images to a virtual DVD-drive in the computer. So the installation routine would stay the same virtually, the labor effort is minimal (well, copying the files once from DVDs, but replicas from the first HD copy speeding things up a bit again).

As I doubt anyone is willing to shell out a good $350 more for just a 500GB installation HD (or $250 for 2x300GB) which will remain almost useless for some after the installation, maybe the dealer could set up a rental fee for the HD for a first installation, while the original product is also shipped like a regular purchase with the DVDs. After installation the customer could send back the installation HD and in case anything goes wrong with his install either again get the HD for a small fee from the distributor or use his DVDs this time.

I think the idea of having to support all common formats for external drives might be stopping this idea from happening - USB2.0, FW400, FW800, eSATA, SCSI-devices and what not...

    Just my 2 cents,
