  • VSL Podcast Competition - Now ended, Winners to be announced soon.

Hey Everyone. Okay so I finally got round to doing this. After quite a while of preparation, and lots of work in between. There is now the first VSL podcast competition where you could win the new VI - Special Keyboards library (worth 295 euros). This package is 8 Gigs of samples for Harpsichord, Harmonium and Prepared Piano. And the two runners up will get VSL instrument posters (More useful than you might think .. and definitely a lovely poster).

The Competition is simply, Compose a piece of original music (no longer than 3 minutes in length), and you may use any sounds you like. The piece must be orchestral of course but there's no objection to the inclusion of drums and such. The pieces will be rated on a points system and judged by myself, Beat Kaufmann, David Ender (of VSL), and Michi Hula (of VSL).

The pieces will be judged on these criterion:

    - Orchestration (originality, balance, realism) 1 - 5 pts

    - Musical Theme(s) (..., ..., ...) 1 - 5 pts

    - Emotion (..., ..., ...) 1 - 5 pts

    - Mix (..., ...., ...., ) 1- 5 pts

    - Overall Impression 3 pts

The closing date for submissions will be November the 15th and the winner will be announced around the 1st of December.

Regardless of the winner, all pieces will be shown on the podcast, unless otherwise asked not to, so everyones piece will be heard. This is really just for fun with the chance to win nice little edition to ones sample library collection. Please send all entries to hetoreyn@yahoo.co.uk - In mp3 128 Kbps quality if you could please. Also next show will be about some of the music I'm doing for Starship Farragut. I hope to get that out in the next week or so. Still pretty busy with composing for this so my time is kinda tight these days.

  • If a piece is not one of the winners, do we still get to see how it was judged?

  • Sure .. can always post the results.

  • Could pieces be submitted that already were posted here or on other forums some time ago?

    Thanks,

    PolarBear

  • Sure .. so long as they are original pieces (Meaning .. not a rendition of Mozart, or Beethoven etc) you can submit anything you like. Doesn't have to be brand spanking new. Although now I think on it I probably made it sound that way. Sorry about that folks. So just to clarify, it just has to be a piece of music written by you, and yes anything you may have posted before is quite welcome.

Only one entry per person please :P

Again sorry about that .. my first time conducting a competition.

  • Can it be live orchestra or does it have to be samples?

  • hetoryn, im sending you an e-mail!

  • "Can it be live orchestra or does it have to be samples?" Hey Matt. This is another one I didn't think about. I think that that pieces should be made from samples. Pieces that have been done by real orchestra have a slight unfair advantage in terms of mix, reverb, and dynamics over pieces made with samples. And as this is the VSL Podcast is makes sense that it's a competition made from samples. You're not limited to any one sample library.

  • Good thing we have a month left (for those of us who do not have music in our back-pocket to send). I guess I better get to work. Thanks for hosting this competition.

.. and can I get my unpaid assistant to do it?

  • Paul, First I have 2 fully paid assistants. Second, the internship is meant to help people who need a chance to learn the business and can't afford the 32 grand it costs to go to USC. Third, I'd never claim another composers work as my own. Why would you make such a tacky statement and aim at someone you know so little about?
