    Hi there, after some efforts I managed to run the VE engine in Logic (in my case Logic 8), but as I am just a "dumb" musician and not a smart engineer I have no idea how to use it! First of all I don't know how to route the loaded VI's within the VE to my different midi tracks, e.g.I want to load the VE into an existing VSL orchestra project in Logic. Why can't the VE load the Logic Audio units like space designer? Too much questions,I know, but the downloadable pdf says nearly nothing about VE and sequencing in OS X, so at the moment the VE is useless for me. Could anyone give me some hints? All the best!     Bumping this thread... I can open up the VE as an audio unit, but can't figure out how to route all the MIDI channels to it. Can anyone explain a simple setup routine for the VE in Logic 8, or better yet, maybe post or email a logic file with the environment set up in it? I have the feeling it's a Stylux-RMX-esque setup, but I couldn't figure that one out either. :( Kerry

     Quoting an edited version what I wrote in another thread at

    "In Logic's environment, create a new multi-instrument - - this will have 16 channels. Wire the multi-instrument to Instrument 1 on the MIxer page of the Environment. (To move an object from one layer of the Environment to another, select the object, hold down the option key while selecting the layer of the Environment to which you wish to move the object.) Name the Multi-Instrument something like VE 1.  After you have done this, load a multi-channel instance of VE into Instrument 1. Go to the arrange page. You will find that, when you right-click or contol-click a track, you can reassign it to VE 1, channels 1 - 16). Load the instruments into VE as you desire. 

    IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using what is, at present, the most current OSX version of VE - - dated 2007-11-08 - -  DO NOT ATTEMPT INSTANTIATION OF MORE THAN ONE INSTANCE OF VE. ((This will still give you 16 channels to work with.) If you instantiate more than one instance of VE, it will work as long as the file is open, but once you've saved and closed the file, attempting to open it again will result in a crash. In other words you will not be able to re-open the file!

    It is important to remember  that, in Logic, MIDI Volume (CC7) changes will affect all 16 channels of a multi-instrument simultaneously. Since this is rarely desirable, use MIDI Expression (CC11) to affect changes in level for each channel - MIDI Expression settings can function independently on all 16 channels."

    Glad I was able to help. One thing I forgot to mention - - but have now included in my original post - - is that, when using the current OSX version of VE (the one released on 11-8-07), do NOT load more than one instance of VE. If you do, you will not be able to reopen the file. The folks at VSL know about and intend to fix this issue. Since one instantiation of VE gives you 16 channels to work with, this should not be too much of a problem.

    Hi, I've just installed Ensemble on my G5, running OS10.4.10 and Logic 7.2.3. Currently, when I go to load a patch or preset within Ensemble, there are no instruments to choose from. I'm guessing that this is because - as mentioned in the Ensemble manual - the existing Vienna Instrument presets need to be copied to my computer's "shared" folder? Am I right in this assumption? If so, I have two questions: firstly, are the presets the ".dat" files currently residing in my Vienna/Library directory? Secondly, if these are the files I need to move, then I have a problem, as they are currently on my e-sata drives, and that's the drive on which I need them to stay, whereas my "shared" folder is on my main startup drive. Sorry for the barrage of questions, but could somebody put me on the right track? Thanks in advance, Paul

    Assuming your Vienna Key is inserted in one of the computer's USB ports, what you need to do is open the VE Directory Manager,:

    If the folders containing your libraries are already visible in the Direcory Manager window, select all of them and push the Rescan existing button. (It should be in Users/Shared/VSL Custom Data.) 

    If they are not visible in the Directory manager window, browse until you find the folders containing your libraries and then add these folders to the window.

    Press the Custom folders button and see if it shows the folder containing this data correctly.  (It should be in Users/Shared/VSL Custom Data.)  If not, press the Browse button and find the folder and choose it.

    Hmm..I don't do it that way.... Just make a new instrument track, with VE as the instrument. Make sure the track is set to Midi Channel 1. All you have to do now in Logic is "Add New Track With Next Midi Channel" to access the channels in VE. Done.... Tom

    Just bought Appassionata strings and trying to set up a track for each midi channel. Midi channel 1 - Violin 1 Midi channel 2 = violin 2 etc. I have set up as described above but when I go back to the Arrange page and reassign the VE (Multi-channel) to their respective channels, there is no sound!! Will one instance of VE suffice for a setup like this, or will I have to assign each string instrument to a Multi-Instrument. Gosh, apologies for such a crass question!! Hope you can help! mike

    Hi Mike. One instance of VE should suffice for your set-up as it can hold multiple VI's operating on 16 independent MIDI channels. However, as intimated above there are certain logistical difficulties involved with setting this inside Logic. Before going any further, can I just ask you if your initial set-up of VE with Appassionata Strings was based on using VE as a standalone outside Logic? I ask this because of your remarks about 'going back to the Arrange page' and 'reassigning'.

    Conquer, many thanks for your reply. You've been extremely helpful to me recently but I've just managed to sort this one out. Although I was correctly assigning the channels, I was omitting to specify the midi-in within the VE as a midi plugin. There will be more questions I'm sure! Keep an eye out for me! Mike

    Good one! I always enjoy a happy ending. As you've seen there are quite a few folks here who (unlike me) know a lot about setting up VE and VI inside Logic, so don't hesitate to come back and ask questions if you get stuck.
