  • Maximum RAM Usage

Hello Everyone! So, we're trying to make a plan to downsize our crazy studio. At the moment we have the entire VI library running on 10 mac mini's and 2 g5's totaling about 25gb of RAM usage. As you can imagine, our cabling is a nightmare for all those computers and interfaces. With Leopard and the new penryn chips, we're hoping to load up as few computers as possible(3, 4), just to keep the studio clean and running with low latency. My question is, what will be the total RAM limit per machine for VI/VE? Am I correct here: 3gb RAM as a plugin through DP, 3gb VI standalone, and 2.5GB total for VE? including copy and pasting the application? I'd like to just run VE instances and not have DP open at all on the sample machines, just to save processing power for Vienna, but i'm not sure if this is possible even with copy/pasting apps. Any advice anyone? thanks!!! kayla :)

  • I take it from the figures you quote for RAM you're working purely on Macs, and not on PCs, and yep, that's a heck of a lot of MacMinis! Ouch, your Bank must hate you!

I currently run 2x XP32 slaves with 4Gb and 2x XP64 slaves with 8Gb alongside my DAW. In terms of addressable RAM, that gives me 23Gb off four machines - and I'm currently building a single 16Gb XP64 machine to take over from the 2x XP32 ones. So I'll be down to two or three machines.

Having said that, in terms of cabling it's all pretty neat with just wordclock, LAN and 2x ADAT feeds coming off each machine.

Not sure that helps your particular situation, but it's food for thought.

  • Hi Ed,

on a dedicated sample computer (as slaves=>no sequencer) you can simply copy the "Vienna Ensemble" application and open as many as you like - each will be able to adress 2.5 GB...
