  • cpu spikes

    How do,

I have a macbook 2ghz core 2 duo with 2gb ram.....i run logic 8 (and hav 7.2.3) even when the cpu usage is very low, when using one instrument, i every now and then get CPU spikes which causes audio breakup for a few seconds. it's usually worse when i first upload a preset but then randomly appears. It only happens with VI/VE plugin instruments and not EXS or others i have.

Anyone else enountered this any ideas Vienna people??

  • How do,

Is this just a Macbook/OSX memory handlin issue with intels? don't get it on my G5 dual 2ghz?

  •  Hi Morphlite,

Hmm, I have the same machine here and cannot reproduce these CPU spikes, unless...

You mention having 2 GB of RAM - which presets have you loaded and where are your samples stored?

Vienna Instruments Presets can be really large and streaming the samples from the internal HD f.i. is not exactly recommended!

I personnally prefer to build my own matrices, especially on the MacBook Pro, and have my content stored on an external FW 800 disc.

Also, what kind of Audio Interface and drivers are you using?

    Best, Marnix

  •  Hi Marnix,

I'm running through the internal audio card, it's my travelling setup, so try to keep it simple. I have a FW400 hard disk for the sample files though.

Yeah i didn't mean presets sorry...i do edit and make simpler matrices.....it's all a bit strange and a little annoying!

It's deffo either the Macbook or VI because it also does it in standalone mode......

I even created a new account with nothing but logic and VI/VE setup on it but still get the same outcome.......

Cheers for the reply.....funny how you can have two different outcomes on same machines.....

If you or anyone else has any other ideas feel free to suggest

  • Hello,

I'm writing again in the hope someone might have a bright idea or be experiencing/have experienced any similar problems.

    original post http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/p/17269/123494.aspx#123494

I'm still having audio breakup problems(not pops/clicks full on breakups) on my Macbook 2ghz - 2gb ram 10.4.10. It happens in VI/VE standalone and when used with Logic 8/7.2.3. (logic cpu meter shows a CPU spike when the break occurs. This happens even with a single instrument loaded.

I use a firewire drive for the samples and have tried the internal analogue and digital outputs on the macbook with the same result.

I've even tried networking the macbook to a G5 PPC dual core 2ghz computer i have and having the firewire drive connected and streaming from that. Which makes me think it isn't a FW problem. (the G5 PPC with the same FW drive and motu 828 words perfectly)

Can't think what might be causing this.....anyone got any ideas......

  • merged the threads - if you fear a post gets out of sight please bump it up rather than opening a new thread ...

a few ideas: your disk for sample data is set to *not journaled*, yes?

are there any other firewire devices attached - the bus might become buisy unecpectedly then.

any background tasks running on the macbook gathering CPU from time to time?

basically i would think it runs better on the intel than on the PPC ....

  • apologees for starting a new thread.......thanks for the speedy response.

No other firewire devices are connected at the same time as the hard disk......I've also created a new user and quit any other programs running in the background. made sure airport and stuff like that are disconnected.....

I will have to check the hard disk "journaling status" at the studio tommorow.....

    cheers

  •  Ok,

The hard disk was journaled, so I actually reformatted a seperate fw400 hard disk into non-journaled and copied the samples over.

Still does the same thing from that drive. I've also tried connecting via USB and not FW400. Still the same.

I've tried using both the internal audio and my Motu 828 to no avail.

This is really bizarre, just can't think what might be causing this.......keep the suggestions coming......if any can think of owt else.

    Cheers

  • usually i would now suspect the MOTU, but you mention it happens also with internal audio .... are you disconnecting the MOTU when switching to internal audio and: we are talking about the 828 mkII firewire, not USB, yes?

you could try other drivers for the MOTU, but maybe you should consider a re-install of OS X on your macBook ...

  • I'm surprisingly having the same issue, having recently bought a Mac Pro I have been having the same spike problems.

I find that if I load a song, then play, it will spike everytime a new sample or instrument hits the mix.

However if replay from the start it will play fine and dandy, until again hitting a new section.

Generally my process has been a time consuming session of play through my tracks from the start each time to get rid of all the spikes as such.

Once I have done this everything runs pretty smoothly, however the long session atthe beginning can be excruciatingly frustrating!

    Any thought's?

Running Logic 8 with SE on Quad Core Mac Pro, 2GB RAM.

  • same problem here, did this issue solve? It's only with logic too... not having the same problems with ableton live for example. (logic 9, macbook pro 2ghz-something intel 4gb ram)

  • To be honest, I rarely have this problem anymore... I added more RAM (6GB in total) and things run so much smoother (as you would expect).

Maxing out the buffer in Logic helped when I had less RAM, though it would spike still, it was much less frequent.

I have also noticed since changing to Snow Leopard that things run smoother still.

  • oh okay, I will upgrade to snow leopard and see what happends. this cpu spike just comes out of nowhere too. it occuors even if vienna is the only thing loaded up... anyone else?

  • I have a MacBook Pro, 2.4 Ghz 4GB of RAM and a connected FireWire 800 HD with the samples.  I have the same memory spike problems.  I can't make them stop.  This also happens inside of Vienna Ensemble.

  • Oh- and I'm using Logic 9, but it also happened in 8.  OS X 10.5.8, MOTU 8pre.

  • Same thing here. Even with VI Pro 2.
