Hi,

I've just been installing my overdrive and concert guitars for VI and got as far as the extended library for the concert guitar. When trying to install this, I came across an error reading the file <151 Concert-Guitar/Concert_Guitar_ext02.dat>. This had happened with other files during the installation of the overdrive and standard concert guitar and I simply re-downloaded and replaced the file. However, after 5 attempts at doing that for this file, I still get the error stating it's a corrupt file.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Oh, and Happy New Year to you all!

Could be a permission problem. If the file itself is corrupt it would normally tell you. But a read error might mean that it's not getting proper permissions.

Try running repair permissions from the disk utility tool. And make sure that the place your installing the files from and to isn't write protected or anything

Thanks Hetoreyn - have now tried that and sadly no difference. The files are all on the desktop and unlocked/unblocked.

nick, if the error says *problem reading xyz.dat* this should mean an error reading the already installed files, the installer files are labeled *xyz.cab* .... you cannot replace a file with something you have downloaded, because the download files are intended to be installed ....

could you please describe step by step what you have done and when exactl the error shows up.

do not forget to use the latest LCC and VI/VE and it would be great if you could email a screenshot from the error to document.write( '<'+'a'+' '+'h'+'r'+'e'+'f'+'='+'"'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'0'+'9'+';'+'&'+'#'+'9'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'0'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'0'+'8'+';'+ '&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'6'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'1'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'1'+';'+ '&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'3'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+ '3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'7'+'0'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+ ';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'0'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'2'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+ '#'+'5'+'2'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+ '5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'1'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'6'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'0'+';'+ '&'+'#'+'6'+'9'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'1'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+ '7'+'0'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'0'+';'+'&'+'#'+'6'+'9'+';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'9'+ ';'+'&'+'#'+'3'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'5'+'2'+';'+'"'+'>'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+ '1'+'1'+'2'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'2'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'1'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'4'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'6'+';'+'&'+'#'+'6'+'4'+ ';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'5'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'0'+'8'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'6'+';'+'&'+'#'+'9'+'9'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+ '1'+'1'+';'+'&'+'#'+'4'+'6'+';'+'&'+'#'+'9'+'7'+';'+'&'+'#'+'1'+'1'+'6'+';'+'<'+'/'+'a'+'>'); ">

Christian, it seems the problem was to do with the checksum - Maya sent me through MD5 and I ran a comparision of the two - The file I thought was wrong was actually ok, but the one before it did not match when the checksum was calculated. I've downloading the 001.cab again and and it seems fine now.

I have no idea, incidentally, what the checksum means, but at least it's another thing to remember if things fail to do what you expect.

Thanks for your help, though. All sorted now.

good to hear you are up and running ...

whereas the checksum is common when used eg. with open sorce downloads (to verfy integrity) it is not very known to the *normal* user ...

initially we didn't have it displayed but since a download is also using the http protocol which is *stateless* and interrupts or errors can occure we thought it's a good idea to allow a check for integrity of the files.

a manual for installation is in preperation which will also cover this topic for users not familiar with this more technical stuff
