  • VE Crashing in DP

Just purchased the Cube and blown away by the sound. The learning curve was steeper than I thought but I'm making headway.

I'm running DP 5.13 on Mac Pro Intel Quad 3.0 with 4GB of ram running Leopard. I started programming with separate VIs and decided to switch to using VE (clutter was horrible). I can only load about 6 instruments into VE before it crashes (only VE crashes) so I figured that maybe there's a limit on how many instruments I could load. I tried loading another instance of VE and loading additional instruments in it but again it crashed VE. I've closed other plug in instruments and other programs but nothing seems to help. Is this a DP issue? A ram issue? Or am I limited to how many instances of VE or a combination of all of these things? It appeared from the FAQs that I should be able to open 24 VI in my sytem before I stress out the processor/busses/ram. Appreciate the help. I'm dying to really get going programming and this is killing me.

There is a memory limit in VE on OSX. How much memory was it using when it crashed? Useful to know, so that this can be taken out of the equation.

  •  How do I find out how much memory VE was using?

  •  Here's the Problem report OS X generated to send to Apple. Sorry it's so long. Hopefully this will help. In the meantime, should I just avoid VE and use multiple VI. Will that avoid the crashes. It's so frustrating to be ready to write and stare at thousands of dollars of investment that is unusable.

please visit your personal files and download a VE version which assumably fixes the issue - don't forget to reboot before updating and please check permissions after installing so we can exclude any side effects. let us know ...

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  •  Thanks Christian. Got my fingers crossed. I'll let you know.

  • Christian- VE still crashed. I went ahead and copied the DP file and just used VIs. I was able to open 8 or ten more VI's before it started slowing down my system. I'm going to have to do some reconfiguring to make my system work (more ram and another computer most likely, I still have an older G5 that might give me enough headroom to run what I need especially with everything else off it). I also saw that there will be a new version of VE available soon. Hopefully that will do the trick. It's a great idea and definitely the future. Appreciate the effort and the constant innovations. • I feel your pain. I am hanging on with plogue bidule until VSL ensemble pro settles down. It seems as stable a solution as you get given we are talking about DP here...

  • I'm running DP6 on an 8GB Mac Pro, but what I've found to work well is to open multiple, stand-alone instances of VE and then feed the audio back to DP. You can open multiple stand-alone instances of VE by duplicating the application with a different name, e.g. VE-1, VE-2, etc. Each instance runs in its own RAM space, so you are much less likely to have RAM-related crashes like you would get running from within DP as plug-in. Of course, it means you have to save your VE configurations separately from your DP file, which is a hassle, but it's a small price to pay for a lot more RAM access.
