  • Western Digital Caviar GP

My mac pro is quiet, you hear only the noises of the harddisks. But I need bigger disks so i'm thinking replacing with some Western Digital GP disks, those are 5400 RPM SATA disks that give performance like an 7200 RPM disks. So less noise and less vibration. If i spread the VSL library over several of those GP drives, will it be fast enough or not ?

  • i've already considered to get some last year but unfortunately they have not been available ... the low power consumption is tempting ...

please note they added a new value in the specs: latency-time 5,6 ms (nominal ... whatever that means) and seektime (8,9 ms)

as far as i understood the saving is caused by a) a variable rpm (5.400 - 7200) and b) *intelligent caching*

8.9 ms (and they don't say at 5.400!) is quite normal and caching is not relevant for sample streaming so i'm not sure if they might finally be significantly more silent than any average 7.200 sATA II harddrive ... eg. i wouldn't call 4 seagates running in a macPro loud

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Some guys on the internet had discovered that those drives are running on 5,400 RPM using frequency spectrum analysis. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article786-page2.html I think i will try them. Thanks for the response.
