    VE download stops after 25% downloaded, cannot resume either.

    Yep, same here. 

    Numerous attempts at retrieval, spread over several hours, and they all whistle along until about 6MB, before stalling, never to resume.

    It looks like a timing problem, caused by something (probably the web server) imposing a two-minute timeout on the data transfer.

    I'm on a 512k DSL link here, and 6MB is about how far it can get in two minutes. 

    I tried it via a 1MB link, and it died at 12.7MB (twice the speed => twice as far through before failing).

    So, I finally managed to retrieve the whole file from a system with a 10MB link speed.

    However, most people aren't in the position I'm in, of being able to login to systems across the Internet with different connection speeds until they find one that works.
