  • How big is VI SE Standard?

I know the full one is like 80 gigs or so, but how large is the STANDARD Special Edition by itself. It says it only comes with 4 DVDs so unless they're dual DVDs I'm guessing it's about20 gigs? Is that correct? Does the extended edition really have 60 more gigs of content? SOrry, I'm just confused a bit.

So, how much hard drive space will the Standard Special Edition take up?

  • The product specs say:

"The Vienna Special Edition Full Library contains 81 GB of uncompressed sample data in 44.1kHz/24-bit. Due to an innovative optimization process, the Vienna Instruments engine decompresses the samples in real-time, so that they take up only 54 GB of space on your hard disk or in your computer’s RAM. Please note: Even if you licensed the Standard Library only, the Full Library of your Collection gets installed on your hard drive since Standard and Extended Library can’t be separated due to structural database requirements."

So whether or not you buy the license for the SE Extended version, you'll still end up with 54GB of samples on your hard drive. Go to http://vsl.co.at/en/211/442/484/485/684/409.htm to check the contents of the standard and extended versions.

  •  Oh I see...

It appears that the STANDARD by itself is around 12 gigs. I found this about by adding the sizes of each downloadable file... but wait...

If I buy the standard one, then I want to get the extended one, how much will the extended one cost?

The full one is like twise the price of the standard.

So it looks like I can buy the standard one, or the full one. Why is extended up there for 500 something dollars? Should I just ignore that then If I have standard, do I pay the other 500 for the extended....

Man, it's like I'll have stuff on my hard drive I can't even use.

So I'm guessing these are dual layer DVDs then.... but even then, it still seems like less than 56 gigs. Dual layer DVDs can only hold up to 9 gigs, and 9 times 4 is 36 so yeah.... SOrry, just curious about how this will work....

Man, maybe I should save up even more and just buy the whole thing, yo?...

So I'm also guessing that the standard edition doesn't come with repitition sounds so it won't have that repetitive effect? I really don't like when sounds do that? Will that be in the standard or full SE or will I have to buy that seperate?

Sorry for all the rambling and thanks for replying.

  • Well, the samples were RARed on DVD which shrinked them up to 50-66% in size in some cases. My guess this is also possible with the VIs.

  • the installer files are using a similar compression algorithm which works as efficient as RAR, they unpack to the full size of the .dat files, which again are ~ 65% the amount as the uncompressed 24 bit wave files would be.

eg. SE strings - download size: 8.32 GB, install size: 13.3 GB, uncompressed datasize: 17.7 GB

There are no repetition samples in the DVD version of the Special Edition. Repetition samples are contained in the download product 'SE Strings - Plus'. It's a bit confusing, but it breaks down like this:

The extended library of SE (DVD version) adds extra instruments and sections (but no new performance styles) to the basic orchestra of the SE standard library.

The download products 'SE Strings', 'SE Brass' (etc.) contain the same data you get in the SE standard library on DVD; the difference is that you can choose to download just strings or brass (etc.), whereas with the DVD version you're obliged to buy the whole orchestra.

The download products with 'Plus' in their name add more performance styles (such as note repetitions) to the ones in the standard library but don't give you any extra instruments.

To see exactly what's in each collection, check the sample content of the libraries shown in the 'Products' section of this web site.

Special Edition (DVD version): Products -> Vienna Instruments -> Special Packages -> Vienna Special Edition -> Sample Content.

Special Edition (Download version): Products -> Download Products -> Orchestra -> SE Strings or SE Strings Plus (etc.) -> Sample Content.
