  • the "Post-Pan" function on a mixer bus send

Hi all, I tried to search discussions on "post-panning" sends but there seems to be none. anyways, there is a "post-pan" function in Logic 8's mixer channel strip and my question is, would i achieve a more realistic sound by sending my dry instrument groups to the auxes (carrying the reverbs) using "PRE-FADER PRE-PAN" or "PRE-FADER POST PAN" ? my ears aren't as experienced yet so please offer your kind help! thank you all :)

  • Welcome Entyng,

This depends a lot on the reverb you're using. It it's a true stereo process, which is able to reflect the position of the incoming signal in the resulting early reflections (thus giving additional positioning cues for the ear), then of course post-pan makes sense. Otherwise, there will be no difference.

BTW - personally, I'm _not_ convinced that the "pre-fade"-reverb send is the ideal solution for mixing.

  • Thank you Dietz, From reading many other posts I've noticed that you personally don't use Logic to sequence and mix your vsl sounds. but do you know if Logic's Space Designer reflects, like you said, the panned position of incoming signal in its early reflection? It doesn't say in its user manual. Again, my ears cannot hear the difference yet so I need to at least try to understand the theory behind what I'm doing at the same time. I bet you've received tons of the same question, but would you also kindly direct me to any of your previous posts on how you approach your mix in general? Apologies in advance if I'm sounding like I don't know what I'm saying or just being annoying!

  • also I don't know why but the posts don't reflect the spaces between the lines so all my sentences are crammed into one single paragraph.

  • You do use Safari. There's a glitch between Safari and the VSL forum software. Either use Firefox with the VSL forums for the moment or put in <br> for a line break or twice <br> <br> to make it look like a new paragraph. This will only work so long as the Safari glitch is not fixed.

Hi Entyng, don't bother, you aren't annoying in any way.

I don't _start_ projects in Logic, but I _finshed_ an awful lot with this program 😊

As far as I know, SpaeDesigner is capable of doing true stereo convolution (which means: both the left an the right input have their own, positional correct stereo-IR, thus resulting in four convolutions for a true stereo engine). But I can't test it right now, and it may very well be that I'm wrong, and that SD just power-pans the input to a simple mono-in, stereo out IR.

Regarding your question about my mixing approach: This is a bit difficult to answer, as I'm one of those guys who don't do things exactly the same way twice. Usually, I try to listen to a piece of music and hope that it tells me by itself how it wants to be treated. - It seems that this works more often than not, in recent days :-)

    Thank you PolarBear.

It seems to work fine now :)

  • I see.
    Thank you for your help.
And please keep me updated when you get a chance try to the SpaceDesigner stereo ability out! :)
