    I'm a beginner with Logic and VI/VE, so I hope my question comes across correctly. 

    In Logic, I've created a Software Instrument Mulit-Timbral track, which gives me 16 midi channels, which corresponds to the 16 midi track in my one VE instance.  When I laid down the tracks in Logic I didn't use any of the Velocity X-fade/Expression controllers in VI.  Now I want to go back and input that controller data so that the instruments have a more natural sound.  How do I do that?  I tried to use the automation features in Logic, but didn't have any luck.  When ever I tried to manually input the automation nodes on one track, it would effect every-other track as well.  Any suggestions.  Hope my explanation was clear :)

    The Multi timbral thing in Logic is strange......i couldn't work it out because as you say the automation data always controls the "instrument" globally.

    You'll be better of creating a Multi instrument in the Enviroment.....have a search on these forums/ download the manuals for VE and you''ll find the setup instructions.

     Thanks for the advice.  Although after reading all of the forum posts I might be more confused than before :)  From what I gathered, is that I cannot use just one instance of VE in Logic 8 and still be able to use the Velocity X-Fade and Expression automations.  Is that correct?  In order to be able to control each instrument independently, I have to have a unique instance of VE for each one?

     Hi,

    I just experimented with VE hoping, it is straightening up my workflow. I can answer your question regarding all automation on different instruments of VE. You have to open aux channels for each instrument of VE by clicking the "+"button of mutlichannel instrument of logic, then assign the midi channel and place all the automation data in the aux channel. For me this is not simplifying the workflow at all, because in the arrange window you will need double as much tracks to handle. For each instrument the channel that contains the midi data and another aux channel that contains all the automation data. So the answer is: If you want to control you instrument independentlywith automation data it is easier to open it up in "good old" Vienna Instrumens.

    I think that you're refering to a multi timbral instrument object in the environment. You can have various (16) different MIDI tracks feeding that multi timbral object but I don't think that that's the way to go with VSL. I open an instance of VI on each track and load the patches in there that I want. For the automation, I do it on that same track. You can always record automation on another track and have that control one or various tracks. Have a look into Vienna Ensemble also. You might find that easier !

    That's exactly what I always did and as it looks like for next future, I still will do . I just hoped that Vienna ENSEMBLE is a quicker alternative. Has nothing to do with a multi timbral MIDI intsrument of Logic's environment.  The thing is, that Vienna Ensemble is in my eyes complicating the work flow, because there is no way to treat the instruments seperately with automation data without having an extra aux-channel for each one of it 😞
