  • Basic question about VE in Logic

Hi all. Basic question for Logic users - you open Vienna Ensemble (a great bit of software) on a Logic track. VE has multiple MIDI channels. How do you build a multi-MIDI-channel arrangement using a single Logic track?

  • Create a new track with the next midi channel. Should be the same "instrument" track in logic, but using channel 2 instead of channel 1. Make sure you also have the right set-up inside VE.

  • Thanks for that, very helpful. I'd got it in my thick head that creating a new track would involve using a second instance of VE, but of course if both tracks are assigned to the same instrument that's not the case.

  •  Conquer:

You also need to create a new multi-instrument and wire it to the instrument channel strip in which VE is instantiated. You might name it VE. Then in the arrange page when you right-click (or control-click) the track name, the Mixer will give you the option of selecting VE channels 1-16.

It is important to note that, when using a multi channel plugin, with Logic, if you try to control volume level with MIDI Volume (CC#7), it will simultaneously affect all  the instruments that are instantiated in the multi-channel plugin. If - as is more likely - you want control of volume level on each track to be independent of the other tracks, you must use MIDI Expression (CC#11).

  • Thanks Stephen.

  • Another thing to consider if you want to use VE as a plugin with Logic.

If you use a multiinstrument the solo, mute and freeze function will affect all tracks. It is therefore not possible to mute or solo just one channel in Logic. To do that you have to mute or solo every channel in VE. I'm not sure how the freeze functions works with VE, I haven't had time to test this.

In my current project I started using VE but went back to VI after a while. This is maybe due to my lack of knowledge of both Logic and VE but it's easier for me at the moment.

  • I use logic 8 and VE and I have had no problems. Use the VE multichannel plugin, this is like using the same exs or utlrabeat sofware plugin, assign the channels of VE to the different outputs. Then go to the mixer page and VE will be there already, click on the plus sign at the bottom of the channel strip and the various outputs will appear, like every other intsrument channel, logics own sends, dsp are available, including solo and mute. Power panning with in VE is still usable. Hope this is of help. Cheers
