  • Tedious Download Process - Can't it be Improved?

Downloading all the cab files for Special Edition PLUS Strings.. Files get 80% complete, and then just stall.  It seems to happen every day.. Then there are times when the files download just fine, like at 2am (I'm in G minus-8 timezone)..

The really annoying thing is that when the file is 80% complete and then dies, you can't just restart it.. Well, isn't that kind of old-fashioned? Most downloads in this day and age have figured out how to resume..

At the rate I'm going, it will take three days to get all the files downloaded.. Just seems kind of stupid..

    Any thoughts?

  • i had a look into the route from you to us (resp the other direction) and it seems sbcglobal has some router issues, especially with the one in richardson, TX has a packet loss up to 30%, which is usually a sign of heavy overload ... sorry, there's nothing we could do at the moment.

from our logs i can see your best download speed is ~ 70 KB/sec, but several are significantly lower and your IP is dynamically changing.

however paul sent you a note about an alternate method ...

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • FWIW when I download videos, etc. from VSL (the videos are very helpful, by the way) the speed is usually 45k/sec or so. It's not just in Bumsen, CA, it's also in Los Angeles.

But I think you can resume downloads in most browsers.

  • I am downloading the woodwinds now. And so far no problems. I can get two files downloading at a fairly nice speed. It is time consuming somewhat. But no complaints....
