  • Need help with melodic lines in Appassionata Strings

    Dear All,

I was following Erik’s thread with his Over the Rainbow arrangement with tremendous interest.  The fact is, I have a similar problem.  The difference is that my string parts are part of a larger orchestration that includes piano, solo violin and cello and maybe acoustic guitar.  These arrangements will be part of a new CD, my eighth for the label I’m working with.  The label doesn’t want me to write melodic lines for strings because, in the past, my string lines lacked authenticity.  I’m determined to change their minds and need your help.

What I’d like to do is show you a MIDI file containing a small section where violins and or celli are playing important melodic or counter lines.  While these lines may seem out of context, particularly if you don’t bother assigning the piano and guitar parts to instruments of your own, the basic problems will be obvious enough that some of the more brilliant among you could at least give me some guidance as to where to begin.

Could some of you give me some advice on how to make them breathe better?

I’m not interested in EQ, panning and reverb because that will be the recording engineer’s job.  I just need the attacks and the phrasing to breathe.  I’m using the Perf Interval 4vel versions of violins and celli in Appassionata for these lines.  Feel free to recommend some other preset or matrix if you wish.  However, I don’t have any other libraries at this time such as Chamber Strings or Sordinos.  I have sliders assigned to 11 for expression, 18 for master attack, 19 for master release and 4 for velocity crossfade.

The most important section would be the return to the A section after the first bridge.  This is at measure 74-90.  I have guitar playing the melody now because I can’t make the violins sing the way I’d like them to.  Also, please note the cello counter line in 74-90.  I’d like that in the score whether the melody is played by strings or guitar.  The second most important thing is the melody in the violins potentially under the piano at 90-106.  I realize everything else needs work but if I can just focus the discussion on those key sections, I’m sure to learn something.

  • Dear All,

I’m attaching an mp3 that corresponds to the MIDI file I put up yesterday.  IN this example, guitar plays the melody at 74-90, time=2:56-3:23,  instead of the strings.  As I explained yesterday, I still want the cello counter line in the score at that point regardless of what plays the melody.  Again, any help would be really appreciated.

Do any of you use breath controller to inject expression and dynamics into your slow moving lines?  Do you find it more effective than moving a mod wheel?

    Thanks again,
