  • Good news for users of Finale and VSL

Finally some good news for users of Finale and VSL:

I just read that Finale 2009 (that will start shipping July 21st) will have full VST/AU instrument support -- ie you can use any VST instrument plug-in and accompanying instrument libraries.

That means you can use VSL directly inside Finale, without using IAC and a host app (VE 2 & 3, Logic, etc)

This will hopefully reduce the CPU use as opposed to using both Finale and VE (standalone) simultaneously.

I have just ordered Finale 2009 and keep my fingers crossed...[:)]

  • Definately good news! I was waiting for something like that and it seems it payed off that I did not upgrade to Finale 2008 and I skipped it.

    Let's hope it works well!

  • I got my copy yesterday. It works, however it seems that the number of instances are limited. For example, I don't it is possible to pull up a Wien VSTi for each staff. It would appear that each instance is intended to have 16 channels, which is fine for GVI. I am not able to get Kontakt to work with the new version of Finale.

I'm not sure what you mean? I tried playing a 16 instrument score yesterday with Finale 2009 and Vienna Ensemble as a plugin-in. It worked well. I'm not working in my studio at the moment so I did some tests on my MacBook at home (2GB RAM).  The result was still much better than the previous solution with Vienna Ensemble standalone and using IAC buses from Finale. The CPU load was also a big improvement (much less) compared to the IAC solution.

I have also used Kontakt 2 (both full version and Kontakt Player2) succesfully with Finale 2009.

Could you give us more details and we might be able to help?

  •  Kontakt worked when I tried to use it again. I suppose I could use the ensemble software, and see how that works. I was hoping to be able to pull up a VSTi instance for each staff in the same manor that I am able to for Overture.

Everything else is working quite well. Does anyone know if 24-bit recordings can be made? I have searched through the manuel, and cannot find anything information.

  • Esperlad:

I'm sorry but you have to use Vienna Ensemble if you intend to playback from Finale. You cannot use Vienna Instruments as separate VSTi instances, like you can in most DAWs (Logic, ProTools etc).

In theory you could use one Vienna Instrument instance for each bank, but since each bank is meant to host 16 midichannels this will not be a very effective solution. In Finale you will always have to use a host application for your virtual instruments. Before Finale 2009 you could only use hosts from Native Instruments (such as Kontakt) but now you can use any host you like.

  •  Vienna Ensemble 2 is not working. I  get a box that says:

    Vienna ensemble

    server interface

    slave: (none)

    status: not connected

  • Esperlad, since Vienna Ensemble 2 works "inside" Finale for me I very much suspect there is something else wrong with your current setup. I'm afraid I don't know what.

  •  I got the software to work correctly. I uninstalled the software, and re-installed it. I am pleased with everything now.
