This is a real shocker.  The last few weeks I have been researching what I am going to do and upgrade from Gigastudio 3 Ensemble to GS4.  The last few days I noticed that ALL the software products disappeared from the Tascam website and I thought maybe it was due to them doing maintanence for the upcoming release of GVI for mac.  I am completely disappointed and hope that this is just a fluke.  What an AMAZING product going to get buried!  Someone will probably try to buy this up or perhaps not.  I have noticed over time that no one hardly makes any samples for this format anymore.  Tascam really messed this one up.  Had the most powerful sampler in the world and now it's going to die.  I am in complete shock of this news.  What a waste..  I have SOO many giga files I guess I am going to have to figure out what I will do with them.  I recently started buying some of the new Vienna Instruments and the death of gigastudio will be something they will probably close the doors and celebrate over.

Now I have to start my research all over again because all the work i put into my giga machines is now irrelevant.  I won't buy into a dead product or purchase new hardware etc for a platform that is not going to get supported anymore.  What a bummer :(.

Thanks so much for this.  I am heartfully disappointed and almost sick at the moment.  I was literally saved by finding this.  I had just purchased wall plates, drill bits (and a lot of other stuff) and was going to smash and drill holes through my studio tonight and run all new digital connections through to other rooms hosting Gigastudio machines.  I am currently on GS3 and was going to get GS4 so I could run it on my new 64bit machine that is also hosting my Vienna Instruments.

I bet Kontakt and a bunch of others are celebrating about this.  I actually feel nascious because of the amount of money I have spent over the years in giga samples and now they have hit an end of life.  All of my Dan Dean libraries, Vienna Libraries to mention a few will have to either be upgraded, re-purchased or I will have to stay on a 32-bit windows machine until they become completely useless samples.

I guess I could convert the samples to other samplers (since I own kontakt and EXS for logic) but I will probably have to redo all the programing inside of them which is not an easy task and extremely time consuming for hundreds of gigs of giga samples.  Maybe someone has a suggestion for this process.

I suppose in due time there will be much information to be had about what can be done about all of us with these giga libraries.  I recently purchased some new Vienna Instruments and the sampler it comes with is pretty awesome.  I am still struggling with getting it down pat though because my brain is so stuck in a gigastudio/kontakt world.  I also wish that it had the ability to read and use my other samples .  That way I could switch over and replace giga with it entirely and be on my way.  Problem is I think my only path for them is upgrading and I don't want to spend that money right now.

What an amazing application, that just ended up in the wrong hands potentially and got ruined.  Time to go start all over again, and re-plan the design of my studio and the future of it.  I am going to go cry now lol.

Regards,

Here are all things that really really suck about this:

1. all my samples are gigastudio format

2. because vsl discontuned my VIP discount there is NO WAY for me to convert to VI now.  I will not wast my inital investment by paying again.

3. I am not sure any other sampler will be able to properly play my samples, my hope is machfive will be able to.  My main concern is the performance legatos

4. I just bought gigastudio 4 and it's very buggy for me.  It crashes a lot and takes 27 minutes to load my template (which only uses about 5 out of the 16 GB's of ram)

5. VSL also stopped selling the samples in other formats so I can't crossgrade to a non-orphanware sampler now.

6. I am screwed anyway I turn.

Here are my hopes:

1. VSL will lower their prices some time in the future

2. Gigastudio will go open source and some blessed people will fix it and keep supporting it(and that tascam will give people their money back for a program that basicly doesn't work)

3. Machfive will become 64 bit and properly run my gigastudio samples (especially the performance legatos)

So here are my questions, questions that I didn't think I would ever have to ask.

1.  Can I get my discount back, can I get something, anything nice from VSL - you guys seem to hate your old customers for complaining but what do you expect, you basicly more or less lied - at least from our perspective.

2.  Can machfive use the performance tool to do the performance legatos properly with .gig files.

3.  is machfive for pc doing the many gigs of ram 64 bit thing?

Thing is, it's not clear who saw this coming, even Tascam. It *is* clear, however, that SoniVox (big Giga folks) almost simultaneously announced their own new format when Tascam issued its press release. What's *not* clear is where all of this going.

I would give it a few days to allow more info to surface because the initial fallout is most definitely hitting many users where it hurts the most.

i don't want to sound too discouraging, but years ago (actually bfore kontakt) we tried to convert the VSL sample libraries to mach V and EMU-X and failed massively - both samplers are using a proprietary format that did not allow to integrate the performance tool.

with mach V it has been the strange order for layers and EMU-X converted all wave files into something else.

so the only chance i can see to use those samplers with VSL performance elements is using the complicated midi routing option like for kontakt 1.5 or HALion

yeah, I was thinking I would have to run a seperate computer just to run the performance tool with machfive - but that's what I was already thinking, so if that would make it work - I think I could handle that for a couple years untill the technolog shifs again.

Unfortunately, this is true. I broke the story on Film Music Magazine. And just a day earlier, my story broke on SONiVOX beating Tascam to market with their own Mac player.

http://www.filmmusicmag.com/?p=1720

Right after the Vienna Instruments were announced, I sat down and worked out my studio options. PLAY had not been announced at that time I don't think, so I was looking at VI vs Giga (I have both First and Pro Editions) and Kontakt. Just from a system integration perspective, I made the decision to bite the bullet and go VI in my studio. I converted all my P4 Giga Systems to VI, except for one which I used with GVI and the older libraries.

I have never looked back.

In a few weeks, I'll have a new 64bit system dedicated to VI and all those older P4s will be liberated for other 32bit apps, and one specifically dedicated to Sequoia (Samplitude's big brother).

there's no question that updating to VI is expensive. But I have to tell you, the flexibility in production and the time saving of not having a hundred or more tracks in a MIDI template has been a joy. I'm enjoying the new formula of:

Im sorry to say Herb and I know its not your decision, but VSL was offering anyone that complained of being put out by VSL from their ending the upgrade for their original premium customers (who helped build VSL into the success it is today) that added deadline of Oct 15 to upgrade. Making a huge press release and email spam and claiming now that everyone who is registered old school users of VSL can upgrade until Oct 15 *because of* the GigaStudio falling out is wrong and downright tacky way of making P.R. - since its a poorly conceived policy to begin with and you are already offering it to people before Tascam dropped GS - all you had to do was call up VSL and be irate...

Tsk tsk tsk

As someone that spent $6k on full pro edition less than 5 years ago I absolutley feel betrayed that you guys dont want to support me anymore and offer me an upgrade path any longer.  Maybe in Austria $6k is a small pittance, but to me right now, upgrading even with my upgrade path which totals over $15k is ridiculous. I did VI Special Edition last week for fear of being blocked out forever from upgrading. While there are some new features which are really nice, most of them have to do with the interface that I use instead of gigastudio and not much has to do with the sounds. Indeed as a VSL Full Pro edition owner, going to Special Edition VI is a severe cutback in sounds normally available to me. I understand but all I can afford right now is that and I guess its all I willever get now :-(

I must say, I do have to agree with the essence of what chris_3594 is saying: In the early days of VSL, users like us wanted to believe that a system like this could work, and were willing to spend $6,000 to see it happen. We liked everything that VSL stood for--intelligence, community, artistry--and we put our money where our mouths were. It's terrifically disappointing to see that VSL would essentially leave us out in the cold with the discontinuation of GS.

It should be clear to VSL by now that most users simply can't afford to upgrade every time VSL revises the architecture of their products (which is surprisingly frequent, given the breadth and depth of this software) and that what they bought 5 years ago would be more than just a piece of clever coding, but an ongoing relationship with VSL for their compositional tools.

We were the VSL evangelists, so let's all start acting like it.

Of course, it's not the fault of VSL that Tascam killed GS, but with the kind of monetary investment that VSL users must undertake, "upgrade paths" just don't cut it. After all, we're talking about a comprehensive sample modeling system here, not a loop CD. Our investment must be respected.

My proposed solutions?

1. Offer those original GS users an alternate format of the product they originally bought. Halion, Kontakt, ESX... I know nothing of these formats or of their host applications, but at least those users will be in a position to keep using their library in a format that hasn't been killed. (Don't want to go to the expense of pressing new DVDs of old software? Then make it a series of downloadable torrents. We have the technology.)

2. Offer those original GS users a means to convert their libraries to a usable/universal format. I know this isn't a very realistic scenario, but an unusable $6,000 sample library wasn't a realistic scenario either, yet here we are faced with it.

3. Offer a substantially more lenient upgrade path for original GS users. Trust me, I'm not paying another $6,000 (let alone $15,000) for what is evidently no longer a sure bet. We invested in VSL, and I think VSL could stand to invest in its users.

We scratch your back, you scratch ours.

emlyn, ahead: i just noticed you had a second account from our old forum and meged it to your account as registered user ...

regarding your propositions ...

the pro edition has been available until sept. 2007 only in gigastudio and exs format and at that time it was not at all forseeable one of these sampler platforms will get dropped, however at this date it was forseeable since a while that several limits with both applications cannot be ovecome with a *plain evolution* of the performance tool which finally lead to developing the Vienna Instruments engine and format.

basically every gigastudio user can export the gig files back to the raw sample (wave) database and several format converters exist, though none of them has ever been capable of converting gig-files to the exs format reliably (the reason why almost everything had to be re-mapped manually), so the most universal format already exists and there is nothing VSL could do to prevent any thinkable transformation.

also basically we could consider to create a torrent - well, we actually wouldn't need to do so, since those sources already exist in certain *P2P networks* - but since logic does no longer use an XSkey since version 8 not the slighliest copy protection is existing here too - should we really support this kind of piracy? and who will guarantee the future of this platform, which is furthermore only available on macs?

let's face it: the pro edition is a legacy product and every step taken to artificially prolong its life is one in the wrong direction - the product range has evolved and so has the discount schema, for any *last minute option* please contact sales directly.

I guess that's just it: The Pro Edition could only ever become a legacy product by virtue of its design. ie: By marrying the sample library to a single engine, it could never be improved. In order to take advantage of a new, smarter engine, the user would have to re-purchase the entire library of samples (essentially, let's be honest) all over again.

For a $6,000 product this is a surprisingly short-sighted approach, and you can see why users like me might see this as unfair "double-dipping".

Of course I understand that there's more to this system than just samples + performance engine, but I look at VSL's new offerings and think to myself, Why would I buy the same sample set just to use elements of their VI technology? Shouldn't my $6,000 investment include some means of benefitting from product improvements that use the same source materials...that I already own?

I know nothing of Halion, Kontakt, ESX, Mac, or any other formats (or XSkeys or format converters); I just know that I have a brilliant, expensive sample library whose host application just got killed and--more importantly--whose true potential seems needlessly confined by the technology it was shipped with.

Maybe I should have just waited for the P2P networks to fill up with bootlegs of VSL's initial offerings, and then spent my money on the real thing (VI) when they had finally figured out their product. Hmm!

just as a follow-up ....

there have been (IMO) very straight upgrade paths from the first edition (170.000 samples) to the pro edition (380.000 samples, upgrade with VIP prices), from the pro edition to the Vienna Instruments Symphonic Cube (790.000 samples) or actually to the Vienna Instruments Super Package (960.000 samples, discounting almost the full price of the pro edition for upgraders)

i'm remembering too well how many computers one needed to have at least the most articulations of the pro edition assigned to an arrangement - at least 4 machines with 2 or more GB RAM), a voluminous midi routing schema and piles of tracks in the sequencer.

so at the time the decisions had to be made even going forward *only* to the symphonic cube with its 800.000 samples didn't look too tempting using these sampling platforms (1 GB limit, 128 kB preload cache instead of 64 kB, limited number of layers, ect) ... admittedly the iMidi rules (which are based on the performance tool processing) as well as 64bit and mac version of GS4 could have evolved to reasonable alternative options ... unfortunately VSL has not even been involved in GS4 beta testing and IIRC this would have been too late ...

looking back also the move from 16bit to 24bit samples could have been done with GS (though if i'm not wrong initially an editor for 24bit has been missing), but all the progress would have been delayed for appr. 2 years

so maybe you can see it is by no way *paying twice for the same samples*, but a logical evolution caused by the sheer size of content ... and you can still use GS and your gigastudio libraries, expand and tweak them by yourself, convert them, export (lossless) to a raw wave format, whatever you like ... (except building your own sample library out of it!) ... the performance tool still works (actually on vista), the support is not canceld, you can still receive activations .... the upgrade offer has been prolonged exclusively for GS users after we had to notice the discontinuation

Here is the rub, for me at least I only need the samples I have (first edition plus epic horns) no more, no less - I'd pay a certain amount for the reprograming maybe even significantly (say 30 percent) but there is no way I can afford the cube. As of right now I am pretty much planning on not upgrading - I'll stick with orphaned gigastudio untill another company comes along with the next generation of virtual orchestra - you have to believe it can get better in the next 5-10 years.  Unfortunatly, I was tought as a kid to look for value in my purchases. To me, to pay such an incredibly large amount of money for a software upgrade with sample tweaks is not a good way to spend money (if you don't understand the logic of my point of view just realize I'd have to buy the full deal to get what I need and all I need is the first edition plus epic horns which I already own)

So, the solution to me, would be to offer First Edition, Pro Edition, Horizon as VI products (seriouisly how hard could this be since it would basicly consisting of drawing up an articulation list and printing discs) for like 30% of the original cost with an obvious upgrade path that can't be revoked on a whim.   The math of the upgrade paths isn't that hard, seriously.  A theory of "too complex" is not a good argument (I am sure the marketing department would disagree).
