  • Can Someone Tell Me About Vienna and Pro Tools LE?

I've been using Logic but may also start using Pro Tools LE for some matters. I've lost track of the RTAS status of Vienna Instruments and Vienna Ensemble as regards LE and RTAS, can someone tell me if it is working OK, etc? Thanks so much Tom

  • Hi Tom,

Yes, on the Mac (you say you've been using Logic so I assume that's what you're using) there are RTAS versions of both VI and VE2 and they work just fine, although there's currently no PC version. I can't vouch for PTLE because I've got a HD system but as we're talking RTAS there's unlikely to be any real difference anyway.

I've been using the RTAS VI for about a year now and it's been totally stable on my system, no major problems at all - I've a feeling that you can probably squeeze a few more instances out of Logic than out of PT; I got up to around 20-21 VI instances and then my system ran out of RTAS voices (each instance is stereo and thus requires 2 voices) but that's probably not an issue with LE systems which are RTAS-only and don't have to get plug-ins in and out of the TDM mixer - so you might actually get better performance!

So basically I think you should be fine; although I've never tried it with PTLE, the RTAS VI has been very reliable on my own PT|HD1 system for the last year and it's a joy to use.  I've also used VE2 with no problems. Feel free to ask if there's anything I can help with.

    Regards

    Nick

  • Hey thanks Nick. Yes, I have a Mac Pro 8 core and 8g ram and Vienna runs super in Logic. But I have some needs that PT will fill so not having a million dollars for an HD I'm getting 003 to make do for a bit. But since Vienna is in almost everything I do it would be a deal breaker if it was buggy or otherwise unstable... Thanks so much! Tom

  • Hi again Tom,

Well, as I don't have a million dollars either (not unless the dollar has fallen in value against the quid again) I've only got a quad-core MacPro with 11Gb RAM with PT|HD1, but it rarely breaks sweat. Typically I record maybe 10-12 audio tracks of acoustic instruments and then have 12-15 VI instances alongside those. Then I've got an RTAS convolution reverb and one or two other RTAS plug-ins (TDM for EQ, compression, etc.) and the system's been rock-solid for almost a year. There's the odd tiny little issue, of course, but you shouldn't have any major problems I wouldn't think. Best to experiment with the Playback Engine settings (or the equivalent in PTLE, I've never used that version) to get the right balance in terms of CPU usage, buffer size and the like. Personally I love the simplicity of PT and when VSL released the RTAS version of VI I was suddenly getting so much more done.
