  • Manuals for VSL / VE

I can't begin to tell everyone how frustrating it is to have this program and not be able to look up some of the most basic of functions.  Why don't we have a manual that explains how to accomplish what this program has to offer.  It's the proverbial carrot in front of the donkey.  Is there a manual planned?  When might it be available?  Is someone on this forum going to write one (put me on the list to purchase it)?  I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers and software, but this program, and the finicky system issues associated with pc's/mac's, makes the learning curve look more like an overhang, instead of just a steep curve.  If I have a manual, I can usually figure out what the manual fails to address, as most of the time the manual has pointed me in the right direction.  It seems cumbersome to me to have to post a question on a forum, when many questions give rise to other questions.  I feel like all I do is look on the VSL forum for answers to questions that don't really address all of the issues.  It appears that many who post here have been at this a long time, and are quite knowledgable about their hardware set-up and this program.  I greatly appreciate their knowledge, but don't feel that they should be answering questions that Vienna should have placed in a manual.  This forum, I think, would be better served to answer difficult questions that will certainly arise with a program of this magnitude.  Many issues could and should be addressed by the authors of this program.  I think I would have thought twice about purchasing this program had I known that the authors were going to take my money and then cut me loose.  Forums are not product support, but rather a place to exchange ideas, get answers to questions that you can't find after reading a manual, and generate a community of like minded users.

    VSL you piss me off

Hello and a very good day to you too, BrowDavi [:)]

I simply couldn´t resist to answer your post with a link to your personal User Area, where you can find all manuals, the latest updates for your software and VI collections, Video Tutorials and much more.

And of course you find all this in the Software CD that is included in every single package of your collection!

I totally agree that a forum can not take the role of customer support, but it sure is a great place to find out more, share one´s opinion, and make friends. Our customer support is also there for you at support@vsl.co.at

The more information you can give us about your troubles, the faster we can help! From your posting I couldn´t find out what exactly you are looking for.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi BrowDavi_29848

It is true that there are a lot of matters to understand until you get good results with samples:

    • Midi aspects
    • Software aspects (Host software)
    • Sample Player aspects
    • Sample aspects (Articulations)
    • Audio aspects (how to mix, how to pan, how to set depths etc)
    • ...

So I understand your frustration. Many musicians have reached this point - beside fantastic samples,

reverbs, PlugIns etc. I've startet to write little tutorials around the usage of VI in its first days.

    They are collected here: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/index.html

Perhaps they will help you some steps further.

Further I recommend VSL's Video tutorials- as Paul mentioned above:

    All the best

  • Oh I have those manuals alright.  I guess that I just couldn't get myself up to the level where the video tutorials were starting.  i also had an issue in that I was loading my instuments in cubase, but I could only load three instruments before my system would say that I was out of memory.  turns out that with this great machine I have, I have a crappy graphics card, and the vsl interface was eating up all the memory.  It all made me wonder if there would ever be enough memory to get a small orchestra up and running.  I had heard the demos, but couldn't seem to find a way to get there.  alas, back to my scubbing.

Thanks Beat for the link to your site, I'll definitley check it out.  The VE is a great addition, but I'm not sure how I will get beyond what appears to be the 16 instrument limit.

  • I have one suggestion for you to check. You should be using Vienna Ensemble, not Vienna Instruments. VI uses the memory available to Cubase; VE uses the memory outside of Cubase. Therefore, if Cubase is using around 1GB memory (for example), you should be able to load about 6GB in Vienna Ensemble. FWIW I have 16GB and my template of VSL is around 14GB.
