  • Command-arrow goes to previous page in Quick Reply

A common text editing command is command-arrow, which skips to the previous word. I use it so often that I don't even think about it. It works fine when you're in the new post or full reply page. But when I press command-left arrow in the Quick Reply window, it navigates to the previous page.

This drives me CRAZY.  I've typed a two paragraph reply to someone and it's gone, there's no way to get it back with page forward. Sometimes I'm so angry that I don't bother re-typing my reply.

Please, please fix this. I'm seeing this in Firefox 3.0.3, but I believe it's happened in Safari as well.

    Thank you.

(Obviously this just happened to me again. It happens once out of every 10 times I post to the forum.)

  • this looks to me rather like a browser related issue - the back button can not be called from a page (except by a javascript, which is disabled in the forum) ... ctrl + arrow (the equivalent to command) works as expected on IE, FF, safari on windows.

cmd-T and cmd-N are also purely browser related key-commands ...

Well, I'm on a PC, not a Mac, but I would expect control-left-arrow to go back a word, not command-left-arrow.

Any browser I've used, for as long as I can remember, on either Windows or Linux, maps back- and forward-a-page commands to alt-left-arrow  and alt-right-arrow.  Since I believe that command-left-arrow is the Mac equivalent of alt-left-arrow, it seems to me that your browsers are behaving as I'd expect them to, and there's nothing that VSL can (or should) do about it.

Are there any programs you normally use where command-left-arrow is previous word but control-left-arrow isn't?

  • keyboard mapping between mac and PC is sometimes tricky eg. @ = AltGr+Q on PC and alt-L on newer macs (earlier it has been something else which i no longer remember)

    usually shortcuts/keycommands translate:

CTRL (PC) -> CMD (mac), aka apple key or earlier *propeller*

ALT (PC) -> ALT (mac), aka option key

CTRL (mac) -> no key on PC

Start (PC) aka windows key -> no key on mac

common shortcuts http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343 - CMD+left arrow is not defined here ...

  • Yes, it's maddeningly inconsistent. Sometimes option-arrow is the shortcut, as it is in this window. But Command-left arrow doesn't go back a page on any web page on the planet except for the VSL reply page.

Mail: option arrow, command arrow skips to beginning/end of line

    Firefox, bbEdit, Word: as above

InDesign and other Adobe apps: Command arrow skips around text, option arrow reduces character spacing

Anyway, just happened to me again. :( You're missing out on pages of my genius because  of this bug. ;)
